I taught in a range of schools for many years before moving into FE, where I found creative and imaginative approaches just as rewarding with adults. Most of my resources are concerned with giving control to the learner, through a range of methods. Some are great for just giving them experience of examination questions, and the chance to discuss these with other learners. I now concentrate on spreading the range of creations from UK KS1 to KS4, and across the Common Standards.

Probability at KS3 or Foundation Tier GCSE. Experiment/data cards, true/false cards, worksheet.

Hands on activities for generating deeper thinking and discussion of probability questions. Learners consider one or more experiment cards and cards with real data to predict the probability of an event. Is a new baby more likely to be a boy? Look at the data. Are all scores on two dice equally likely? Try it and see. An extensive worksheet to consolidate learning, and some true/false cards to get deeper into the questions, which are also in a PowerPoint presentation. All photographs (c)2105 Colin Billett

Mathematical Words in Word Clouds - Colour Versions! Each branch of the subject for KS3 or KS4

Maths. Descriptors and specifications for UK Key Stage 4, although equally adequate for KS3. All lovingly put into word clouds using Wordle. I made B/W versions some time ago, but now I've been asked for colour, so here they are. Copyright on final images (c)Colin Billett 2015 And all credit to Wordle, as cited on the website: 'May I make money off of Wordle images? Yes. You may take a Wordle, put it on your book cover, your t-shirt, your campaign poster, what have you. You may get rich off it. If you want to give credit to wordle.net, feel free!' So again, all credit to wordle.net, and many thanks! Any problems, please let me know and I can change the formats.

KS3/KS4. Averages of grouped data. Data in class intervals. Practical examples & worksheets. F&H

The motivation for this was the difficulty Foundation learners have with averages of grouped data, and no doubt many Higher learners too. I’ve spent years trying to demonstrate the interval in which the median lies, and watched learners who appeared to follow the method for mean of grouped data, only to watch them go to pieces on tests. So this time I went for kinaesthetic and colourful, my main aim always. The documents are in Word so you can cut my photo if you want. I’ve thrown in a couple of real questions, and there are plenty more about, but very easy to make up in this style. All images (c)2015 Colin Billett
Maths Geometric Reasoning Higher Tier KS4. Great lesson for hands-on activity and discussion.

Maths Geometric Reasoning Higher Tier KS4. Great lesson for hands-on activity and discussion.

Everything for a great lesson developing geometric theorems and reasoning with circles. Matching cards activity with full solutions on PowerPoint, worksheet with corresponding presentation. Learners enjoy the hands-on activity and can keep the cards to help them solve the problems. PowerPoint can be printed for learners to keep for future reference. The lesson covers: apply and prove the standard circle theorems concerning angles, radii, tangents and chords, and use them to prove related results. It builds on my other resource for KS3 and Foundation Tier Geometry. All images ©2015 Colin Billett

Six quizzes on PowerPoint covering aspects of number to introduce or round off a lesson on number – integers, directed numbers, decimals, fractions, and percentages. Designed for use with Level 1 16+ learners but suitable for lower levels at any age, or bright youngsters! Plus ten sets of multiple-choice worksheets also covering aspects of number, likewise originally for L1 16+ learners but equally suitable for younger age groups. These have been very popular for a long time. All images ©2015 Colin Billett

Maths KS3 or KS4 revision. Volume of prisms, with a recap of area.

KS3 - derive and apply formulae to calculate volume of cuboids (including cubes) and other prisms. Worksheet/activity to recap simple area, a presentation in PowerPoint to get the learners thinking about volume of cubes, cuboids and prisms, then assorted worksheets presenting prisms in a variety of ways, including those drawn on isometric grids. In PDF or Word for editing and adopting.

Key Stage 2 Fractions - huge bundle of stuff.

13 Resources
Lots of resources covering fractions in KS2, so great for revision in KS3 and Foundation GCSE. Equivalent fractions, ordering fractions, and four rules of fractions. Addition and subtraction moves from same denominator, through one denominator a multiple of the other, to different denominators. Multiplication and division develops in the same way - simple stages. I've lots of stuff free on fractions, so check the free stuff first if you like. Save 77%!
Maths KS2 Simple addition & subtraction of fractions, same denominator. Presentation + activities.

Maths KS2 Simple addition & subtraction of fractions, same denominator. Presentation + activities.

(3)
Addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator - UK specs for KS2, Year 3. Great of a bit of revision in Year 4, but learners forget this stuff at every age! Presentation with lots of images and questions, each followed by the answer, or a cut down version with just the questions, and a handout version for the learners to record their own solutions. Colourful, and aiming for class engagement. Plus two worksheets/activities that get the learner shading the fraction sums with a variety of shapes, to see the connection, and a mixed page of addition and subtraction for the learners to complete.
Maths KS2 and above. Fraction equivalences and simple addition. Powerpoint for class discussion.

Maths KS2 and above. Fraction equivalences and simple addition. Powerpoint for class discussion.

(2)
Fifty slides in a PowerPoint for class discussion of equivalent fractions leading to simple addition of fractions. Nothing complicated - made for class activity and discussion. Get the learners to answer on mini-whiteboards or simply answering each question. Fully illustrated, with answer pictures for each question, as well as repeat slides for the learners to come up with answers. And designed for working in the head of the learner rather than pencil and paper. (Too much time is often spent with pencils and not enough talking.)

Maths KS2 Year 6 or KS3 revision: multiplying pairs of fractions; presentation, worksheets, answers

(2)
National Curriculum Maths year 6, but also essential for revision in KS3, and great for lower tiers of Foundation GCSE. 'Multiply simple pairs of proper fractions, writing the answer in its simplest form'. Guidelines say: 'Pupils should use a variety of images to support their understanding of multiplication with fractions. This follows earlier work about fractions as operators (fractions of), as numbers, and as equal parts of objects, for example as parts of a rectangle.' Clear step-by-step presentation with questions and answers built in for class discussion and question/answer session. Everything for at least one lesson and some consolidation.

Maths GCSE Foundation & Higher. Surds & irrational numbers, three activities in shape and measure.

(1)
Maths GCSE Foundation & Higher. Surds & irrational numbers, three activities or investigations in shape and measure. Finding the length of a the side of a square that leads to an irrational number. Comparing ratios of paper sizes to derive the ratio of length to width for A4 paper. Finding the area and perimeter of the pieces of a tangram. All good stuff that leads the learner through different process to derive lengths and areas using surds, and to add and simplify with surds. Needs knowledge of Pythagoras, which is KS3. So great for revising Pythagoras with surds.
Maths KS 2 Geometry. Bundle of activities and worksheets. Introduction to geometry and angles.

Maths KS 2 Geometry. Bundle of activities and worksheets. Introduction to geometry and angles.

(1)
Some ideas for KS2 Geometry, covering part of the specs for Year 3. • recognise angles as a property of shape or a description of a turn • identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn; identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle • identify pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines. Editable in Word so you can remove the 'Year 3' reference in the headers - I do it for my own recognition. Hence suitable for revision in year 4 and above. Plus a presentation showing horizontal and vertical through photographs.
