I use this basic skills test in my literacy intervention groups in order to highlight areas of weakness in four of the main areas: Punctuation Capital Letters Word Classes Comprehension It acts as a fantastic indicator to specific areas of weakness and allows me to give differentiated and focused support to each student. The total score is then given and shown as a percentage. The students will then re-take this test at the end of a 6 week teaching period, at which point my targeted scores are between 80-100%

Each square will contain a description or clue, for example “name of Scrooge’s old boss". The students then work in groups to find the answers for each square. When they think they know an answer, one member of the team can ‘rush’ to the board to stick their post-it-note containing their answer over that square. That square cannot then be guessed by any other team. When all squares are guessed, the correct answers will be shown on the next slide. The team who correctly guess the most squares wins the game. A 50 slide animal quiz full of fun and unusual animal facts sure to amuse and engage your class. Did you know that a hippopotamus sweat is pink? Or that a group of owls is called a parliament? Students choose between four different answers for each question and then race against the 10 second timer. Answers can be written on individual white boards and points awarded for correct answers.
