In the Red section, students are given an expression and a number in the middle and have to add them to fill in the top answer (adding expressions) and multiply them to fill in the bottom answer (expanding single brackets). In the Amber section, students are no longer given both middle expressions but might be given one expression and either the sum or the product (meaning they will have to subtract the expressions or factorise to find the missing expression from the middle). In the Green section, students are given just the sum and the product and have to determine what the number and expression must be in the middle. This will provide a good level of challenge for students who are looking to master their algebra skills.

This is very challenging and students can either use trial and error or a more rigorous algebraic method depending on their ability. Students who have mastered simultaneous equations should be able to approach this.

This gives students practice rationalising the denominator. In the Green section, students are given just the sum and the product and have to determine what the two surds from the middle are. This is quite challenging but the students can find solutions using trial and error, thinking of two coefficients that add to give the coefficient in the sum (the surd part is the same in each question) and seeing if that makes the correct product at the bottom.
