Five weeks worth of writing skills to practise independently. These can be used as a starter activity when pupils come in at the start of the morning, at the start of an English lesson as a starter or at any other spare moment during the day or even as a short intervention with a child or particular group of children. The activities over the week work on different skills around writing. These are similar across the booklets so far and include:
Putting capital letters and full stops in the right place
Completing ideas so they become full sentences
Using because, but and so to complete sentences
Writing their own independent sentences
Using other conjunctions within a sentence
Creating sentences that use particular punctuation to mark the end
Editing and improving sentences
There is also a themed booklet included with all the writing tasks for the week linked to thunder storms. This has been used to support a writing unit for a setting description that involves a storm but can also be used as a general resource.
Over time, more booklets will continue to be added that work on different skills alongside the ones previously mentioned.
A fully planned and resourced writing unit working on creating a setting description based on a storm with thunder and lightning.
Included in the resource is:
Lesson PowerPoints
Activity resources
Fronted adverbial word bank
Word bank linked to storms
Drafting sheet adapted from Single Paragraph Outline
Example texts
Starter activities for the first five lessons with answers included
A writing skills booklet that links to storms that can be used separately elsewhere to support writing in the unit
Notes for the planning and the aims of the lesson
With drafting and redrafting, as well as then publishing a final piece, there should be enough lessons for between 8 and 10 lessons. The first few lessons work on developing ideas and sentence construction ahead of the writing process with a lesson on developing vocabulary ideas, unpicking example texts, working on fronted adverbials and redrafting sentences forming the first four lessons. Where activities are used, these sentences also link purposefully to writing about storms to develop understanding further.
This then leads into drafting and redrafting, including teacher modelling and providing feedback based on how pupils write, with the previous activities and word banks still being available to support during the writing process.
Due to copyright, you will need to source an image to base the writing on - this needs to be a picture of a lightning storm and would preferably be set over a water scene - this is however reflected in the price and all resources uploaded are in PowerPoint format so they can be edited as required, including the lesson PowerPoints that include notes for teaching and where to add your own image
A fully planned and resourced writing unit working on creating a set of instructions for mummification.
Included in the resource is:
Lesson PowerPoints
Lesson activities including a sequencing task and a editing task
Fronted adverbials and imperative verbs word mat
Instructions knowledge organiser
Model text
With drafting and redrafting, as well as then publishing a final piece, there should be enough lessons for between 6 and 8 lessons. The ‘lessons’ as they appear on the PowerPoint may take more than one ‘lesson’ and form sequences of learning. The first step is looking at the features of instructions, including a focus on the knowledge organiser before then identifying these in the model text.
The second sequence then moves on to being able to sequence the steps of mummification when given a set of instructions that can then be improved as part of a challenge. This moves on to then taking a simple set of instructions and improving them, with teacher modelling and guided practice before completing the activity.
This then leads into drafting and redrafting, including teacher modelling and providing feedback based on how pupils write, with the previous activities and word banks still being available to support during the writing process.
A complete writing unit for teaching explanation texts through writing one about the digestive system. It has been created with lower KS2 in mind but is easily adaptable.
Each ‘lesson’ is broken into chunks of learning rather than directly being a one hour lesson. This means some of the lessons may take more than an hour and be completed over a sequence of lessons instead, with the focus being on the learning and activities within this rather than ‘rushing’ through in an hour. Altogether, there is approximately two weeks worth of lessons, with slightly longer depending on how long drafting, redrafting and publishing take.
The unit includes lessons on:
Features of explanation texts
Cohesive devices
Research
Creating simple sentences
Drafting and redrafting
Publishing
All lesson PowerPoints with notes are included as well as a model text, a summary organiser about the digestive system, activity sheets and a explanation text summary sheet.
Attached are moderation grids for the interim statements (recently released 2016-2017) for Writing, Science and Maths. This includes working below and greater depth for writing and can be used as a simple tick box exercise. Whilst they include many potential tick boxes, these are in no way how many pieces of evidence you require.
A set of worksheets that were made for a Year 5 nouns lesson with three differentiated activities to complete. They worked well in my lesson so thought I would share them in case anyone else found them useful.
A lesson on being able to paragraph accurately that has been created for Year 5 children but is easily adaptable to other age groups. Included is a presentation looking at TiP ToP paragraphs, identifying what these are with children and then looking at examples and deciding how paragraphs are being changed.
Also included are three differentiated activities and a writing help mat that includes TiP ToP paragraphs.
N.B The activity one for LA is the first page from the lesson 3 and 4 LA sheet as this came from a different unit of work originally.
A lesson/ two lessons based on writing and punctuating direct speech. The lesson is based on the mini story of Geri's game that is shown on Literacy Shed with the key element of the lesson focussing on being able to describe what the two characters may say between one another and ensuring this is punctuated properly.
