Make Maths Matter is a 12 week intervention that is designed to build children's number confidence in Key Stage Two. Within the scheme is an explanation of the thinking behind the way it has been planned out and why it is important to start with the basics.
There is then a mini plan for the three sessions each week to be led by either a teacher or teaching assistant that explains the purpose of each session.
This is finished off by an Appendix that explains particular concepts in more details and gives a brief description of how each resource is to be used.
An introductory lesson for Year 4 Place Value with children working on numbers up to 1000. As a first lesson, it requires children to work with Base 10, identifying different values based on what is represented, including thinking about the use of a place holder.
The lesson includes:
An arithmetic starter as part of the PPT - based on taught objectives in Year 3 as expectation is it is taught at start of Year 4
Lesson PPT
Activity and answer sheet
Challenge questions and answer sheet
Two different worksheets that give the chance to practise multiplying a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number using the written method.
Both worksheets are set out in two ways: one where the questions are just written and children need to set them out and one where they are already set out ready. Answer sheets are also included for both sheets.
The first sheet focuses on multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number before then multiplying the same 2-digit number by a 2-digit number to introduce the new step. The final questions are then a range of 2-digit by 2-digit to apply the new learning.
The second sheet focuses on multiplying different 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers.
There is also a multiplication square attached to support if necessary.
A lesson that focuses on being able to multiply and divide by 10, 100 or 1000. Taught as an arithmetic style lesson that focuses mainly on the practice of the skill with questions and answers to self-check. There is also an 11x starter and some challenge questions for those that finish and place value grid to support learning.
Two different worksheets that give the chance to practise multiplying a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number using the written method.
Both worksheets are set out in two ways: one where the questions are just written and children need to set them out and one where they are already set out ready. Answer sheets are also included for both sheets.
There is also a multiplication square attached to support if necessary.
Two different worksheets that give the chance to practise written division of a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number with remainders.
Each worksheet includes questions set out as a list or already set out in the correct method as well as having an answer sheet.
A lesson that focuses on being able to read and plot coordinates in the first quadrant. Included is a PowerPoint for the lesson that includes an arithmetic starter as well as an activity with answers and three challenge activities for those that are confident.
Three different worksheets that give the chance to practise multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number using the written method.
All three worksheets are set out in two ways: one where the questions are just written and children need to set them out and one where they are already set out ready. Answer sheets are also included for all 3 sheets.
The first sheet focuses on multiplying the same 2-digit numbers by different 1-digit numbers to practise the method.
The second sheet focuses on multiplying different 2-digit numbers by the same 1-digit number and the third sheet is a mix of different 2-digit numbers and 1-digit numbers.
There is also a multiplication square attached to support if necessary.
The KS2 Arithmetic paper for 2017 completed with all the answers being wrong. The aim is then for children to work through and identify mistakes/ what the correct answer is. Many of these are based on misconceptions or silly mistakes that children make.
Two different worksheets that give the chance to practise written division of a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number with no remainders.
Each worksheet includes questions set out as a list or already set out in the correct method as well as having an answer sheet.
Attached are moderation grids for the interim statements (recently released 2016-2017) for Writing, Science and Maths. This includes working below and greater depth for writing and can be used as a simple tick box exercise. Whilst they include many potential tick boxes, these are in no way how many pieces of evidence you require.
A PowerPoint and activity that can be used as a revision lesson for angles of triangles and quadrilaterals. The PowerPoint recaps aspects of angles before practising with the focus shapes before setting children off on the activity.
If required, they could work through a practice sheet for calculating missing angles before moving onto the provided activity that includes questions from White Rose and previous SATs questions.
A document that provides examples of how you can ensure maths is being delivered across the curriculum in KS2. The document is divided into math strands and then ideas of how other subjects can meet some of the objectives within the strand. It is by no means a complete list of ideas but is designed to be a starting point to support maths across the curriculum.
A fully resourced multiplication and division lesson for being able to complete questions linked to the 2, 4 and 8 times-tables in Year 3 based on the objective from White Rose Maths.
Included in the resource is:
A lesson PowerPoint with starter, vocabulary, modelling (with teacher notes) and guided practice
Lesson plan
Worksheet with answer sheet
Scaffolded worksheet with answer sheet
Modified worksheet for those who need additional changes to access the learning with answers
Challenge tasks
Support strips that can be stuck in books
Everything is included that could be needed to run the lesson successfully, with each resource carefully considered in ensuring accessibility for all as well as ensuring there are plenty of opportunities for challenge to provide depth of understanding.
A coordinates worksheet for creating a pumpkin face to be able to link maths work and Halloween.
The coordinates are based in the first quadrant so can be used across most of Key Stage 2 to either introduce plotting coordinates or be used as a recap to practice being able to plot coordinates.
This could also be used as a homework task, or simply provide some opportunity for Halloween fun whilst working on coordinates.
A double lesson that focuses on being able to find multiples including common multiples. Included is a PowerPoint for the two lessons that includes an arithmetic starter as well as an activity with answers and three challenge activities for those that are confident.
