It creates a “maze” where learners have to find a connecting path from one side of the screen to the other. This simple coding allows a picture to be dropped into a frame which makes up a row, the rest of the row being a series of words which make up a sentence, the picture representing the homophone. The coding allows this TEMPLATE to be used for any sentences to include a picture whether it be an English, science, history, geography topic or project. In this simple activity learners have to try and match an idiom with the correct meaning. To help the learners understand this concept if they correctly match the pairs the “meaning” will turn yellow, if not it will turn red. I have called them [calculator sentences] because they use the coding taken from a “calculator” activity in which by clicking on a word [in this case] the same word is displayed in a “screen”. By this means learners can simply “click” on words for them to appear as a series of words which become their sentence. This obviously means that using any suitable picture and set of words any subject or topic could be easily created as “calculator sentences”. A bank of these available may be a useful resouce to keep handy. All of my activities are created on an Acer Chromebook in a series of Posts on a Google Blog. So, if you have a blog, or want to create one to try this concept out, simply copy and paste the text in the downloaded text file as a NEW POST and PUBLISH. They are created as TEMPLATES for you to adapt and add your own content. The screenshots can be downloaded simply as worksheets. The activities are meant to be fun, flexible and differentiated. They are meant to develop transferable skills and be cross curricular. As a result they hopefully reinforce small chunks of information and give a better understanding of a topic.
