Circuits and current - complete lesson (KS3)

(1)
A lesson based on the Activate 2 (P1.2) SOW but can be used for others. The lesson involves an introduction to circuit symbols, current, measuring current and cells/batteries. Students then model current in a circuit using rope. There is then a simple practical where students measure current within simple circuits; battery packs, connection leads, ammeters, bulbs, motors, buzzers and switches are required. This is followed by a differentiated question grid challenge where students answer as many questions as they can within 10 minutes. The plenary is based on student reflection against the learning objectives. Students can be asked to read out their answers during the plenary, and this can be 'pop corned' on by throwing around a soft toy.

Loudness and pitch - complete lesson (KS3)

(1)
A complete lesson based on the topic of loudness and pitch. The lesson is based on the Activate 1 (2.3) SOW but can be used for others. All resources/activities are incorporated into the slides, no additional worksheets required. Planner cards (red, green and yellow) are needed for AFL at one of the learning checkpoints, and an oscilloscope would be good for the demonstration - a video is included if this is not possible. The lesson teaches the relationship between loudness and amplitude, and frequency and pitch prior to class wide AFL. The audible range is discussed and students are then redirected to the question posed within the starter. Students must then design an audible deterrent systems to protect certain animals (such as a goldfish) from predators making use of a table which gives the audible range of different species. The plenary is based on student reflection on their progress against the learning objectives, a soft toy can be thrown between students to elect who reads out their answer.

(0)
A complete lesson on energy dissipation tailored towards the AQA SOW. Covers useful energy, wasted energy and friction with a learning checkpoints based on a past exam question. The ‘spreading out’ (dissipation) of energy is then covered ahead of a simple practical activity where students use pulleys to investigate friction and its effect upon work done. Follow up questions and answers included to facilitate peer or self marking after practical. Originally this lesson was planned fora high ability year 10 group, but has been used with year 9 group with no problems.
