American Civil Rights: March on Selma & Voting Rights Act 1965.

The purpose of this lesson is to encourage pupils to reflect upon the progress made by the Civil Rights Movement by 1965 through concentrating upon the March on Selma which led to the passing of the Voting Rights Act 1965. There are a variety of hook / starter activities to choose form dependent upon your class e.g. Geography map skills starter to chart the distance between Selma and Montgomery. Pupils are introduced to the March though watching the trailer and answering questions on the film 'Selma' leading to a source based activity then a card sort / time line activity to chart the events of the march. Pupils will select the most significant turning point they believe in these events which led to the Voting Rights Act 1965. I have included videos to prompt discussion (embedded) and links provided, homework and an exam preparation skill based source task. The American West: Cowboys, Ranching and Homesteaders.

his lesson has been designed for the GCSE Edexcel American West module. All outcomes are linked with Paper Two’s Assessment Objectives 1 & 2. The focus of this lesson is to build pupils knowledge regarding the life of a Cowboy and the problems they faced. Pupils will also learn about the rivalry between Ranchers and Homesteaders. the lesson begins with a re-cap of the reasons cattle ranching spread to the Great Plains before conducting an inquiry into the life of a Cowboy. I have included two possible tasks here to appeal to various learning styles. 1. Pupils can listen to a song about the life of a Cowboy identifying the problems they faced. OR 2. Pupils watch a short video clip explaining the life of a Cowboy on a Ranch. Pupils can then use this knowledge to complete a consolidation task linked to the different roles of Cowboys on the Long Drives / in Ranches. Pupils are then introduced to the problems encountered by Ranchers and Homesteaders (Video embedded here to introduce the problem of Barbed Wire). Pupils will then compete in groups in a relay style task to identify the other main rivalries between Ranchers and Homesteaders. OR If you have computer access I have also suggested an alternative cartoon strip style task. (Link Provided) this may work better for less able pupils. Videos links are provided and further advice can be found within the description of the presentation regarding the various forms tasks could take to suit your class. You will need the Pearson Edexcel American West Textbook for one of the activities.

The aim of this lesson is to allow pupils to explore the 1965 'Watts Riot' as a case study linking in with the era of 'Black Power'. To start - have room ‘turned upside down’ – desks on sides – chairs turned over – information / interviews and pictures to be stuck around the room - hand pupils their investigation sheets as they walk in allow a certain amount of time to pass for pupils to lead their own learning here to discover what has happened, why, where, who and the outcome: Chips or paper money (print off) to be handed to pupils this can be exchanged for help from the teacher if they spend it however they lose a merit or sweets etc.. As a reward. Pupils then define a riot and feedback their findings to the teacher who leads a discussion about the riots and other riots which took place during this time before linking this knowledge to interpreting a source of evidence form the riot. Pupils are then introduced to the 'Kerner Report' which then allows pupils to demonstrate their knowledge with a judgment line activity about the impact of these riots upon the civil rights Movements. Video plenary which of modern day link riot which similarly took place in Ferguson, Missouri, 2014. This lesson has been designed for the GCSE Edexcel American West module. All outcomes are linked with Paper Two's Assessment Objectives 1 & 2. The focus of this lesson is to build pupils knowledge regarding the continued developments of settlement in the West. 1. Exoduster Movement (1879) 2. Oklahoms Land Rush (1893) Pupils begin with a re-cap of different impacts of migration by studying American Progress, an 1872 painting by John Gast. Pupils then have a card sort activity to build their understanding of the causes and consequences of the Exoduster Movement 1879. Pupils then condust an inquiry of the Oklahoma Land Rush 1893 by viewing a video (embedded) and using a worksheet to consider the different perspectives in relation to this (Plains Indians V Settlers). Pupils then consolidate with an exam style question (Mark shceme Provided). The lesson begins with a hook song (Strange Fruit) pupils enter to this song and consider the lyrics to hook them into the lesson - what is the song about? Through a Geography & Literacy link; pupils consider what ‘white supremacy’ means and why was the idea of it so prominent in the south? Pupils are then introduced to the KKK through a video (embedded) which identifies a case study of one of the horrific crimes they committed. Pupils are then set off on their main task: Depending on your class the main task for this lesson could take many forms, some suggestions are: Pupils could work in teams and study evidence (11 pieces of evidence included) around the room to create a fact file on the experience KKK (Prize for best one). Or pupils could work independently recording what they have learnt from the evidence in their books. Pupils will then have the knowledge they will need to assist in their exam style question plenary or homework (mark scheme included) which the teacher can then use to assess progress. The lesson begin through an inquiry into the 'Black Lives Matter' movement currently happening in the USA. Pupils are encouraged to think why this organisation exists and can they draw any similarities between what a video shows them (embedded) and what was happening in the USA during the 1940s. Pupils develop their own aims if they were to start a civil rights organisation then compare then with the NAACPs. Pupils develop their knowledge on the NAACP through watching a video (embedded) and competing an assessment sheet from what they learn. Pupils then compare the NAACP with CORE and their ethos of using nonviolence to achieve their aims. Pupils study the rules of CORE and complete an activity to embed these in their knowledge (a variety of tasks are suggested for differentiation) Pupils complete the lesson through comparing the successes of both organisations before deciding which organisation assisted the civil rights movement the most. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce pupils to The VC and their tactics. Pupils will begin with a literacy inquiry into 'Guerrilla Tactics' before being introduced to a short video - pupils are encouraged to note down all the tactics they can spot. Once receiving feedback the teacher will then instruct pupils to rank what they believe at the most effective tactics (judgment line/ whiteboards / sticky notes to explain most effective tactic). Pupils will then be introduced to the VC tunnels and assess two sources of evidence to inquire into the most useful to understand VC tactics (GCSE Edexcel mark scheme included to self / peer assess). This lesson has been designed for the GCSE Edexcel American West module. All outcomes are linked with Paper Two’s Assessment Objectives 1 & 2. The focus of this lesson is to build pupils knowledge regarding the relationships and growing tension between the Plains Indians and settlers between 1835-62. Pupils will begin with a discusion of Sacheen Littlefeather refusing to accept the Best Actor Oscar on behalf of Marlon Brando due to the mistreatment of Native Americans throughout history. Why is this? Pupils will then study and discuss why there may have been tension and conflict between the Plains Indians and settlers; before being introduced to the Fort Laramie Treaty as recommended by the Pearson Edexcel Textbook. Pupils will inquire into the terms of the treaty (see description on the slide for activity advice) and why it was so unfair (class treaty sheet, explained in presentation) before consolidating with an exam style question form paper 2 about the consequences of the Treaty. **The purpose of this lesson is for students to develop their understanding regarding the importance of trade for the growth of the Empire. ** **Lesson Plan: ** Hook / starter - Embedded video of all the countries which have been part of the British Empire - students to enter and remember as many as they can. Lesson introduction (optional) goods of the Empire such as bananas, spices, tea, coffee, sugar etc. are placed into bags / big bags - students circulate the room and feel feel / smell the bags content to guess what the good may be. This leads into the watching of a BBC video where students are challenged to remember more goods that the Empire traded in. Students complete the ‘Empire Map Worksheet’ with the locations of goods and trade routes. Students are then issued with an advertisement of one of the goods sold back in Britain. students engage in a MIX-PAIR-SHARE activity to discuss key questions linked to the advertisements Students then return to write up their work in the books linked to a GCSE style question (Exam skill advice and structure included for differentiation). **Plenary: **Blockbusters linked to empire good! **Lots of of interactive activities to engage students with songs included and moving gifs! **

This was recently graded an 'outstanding' lesson by Ofsted. Hook: Video to be played upon arrival to class. Lesson Intention and differentiated outcomes. (SMSC Outcome included). Kagan activities included (Mix Pair Share - Rally Robin). All videos and songs included within the presentation. This lesson would appeal to auditory, visual and kinaesthetic learners'. The focus of this lesson is to build pupils knowledge of the Homestead Act of 1682 and the impact it had upon the American West. Pupils will build upon their prior knowledges of Migration (See my store for this lesson) to explain the consequences of the Homestead Act. The lesson is split into two learning phases: 1. The problems of living on a Homestead. 2. The achievements and limitations of the Act. Introduction to Black Civil Rights.

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce pupils to section one of paper three (The USA, 1954-75: Conflict at Home and Abroad): Attitudes towards black people during the 1940/50s. Tasks are linked to assessment objectives AO/1/2/3. Pupils are introduced to the two question types linked with American Civil Rights. Pupils then begin with defining 'Civil Rights' through a think-pair-share activity before being introduced to President Obama's inauguration - pupils are encouraged to discuss why this was such a significant part of American History. Reverse back to the USA during the 1940s and 50s: Pupils view a very racist animated cartoon from the time to prompt discussion about white peoples' attitudes towards black people. Pupils then use the support sheet to create a kick-starter campaign raising awareness about the mistreatment of black people during this time. Pupils then consolidate their learning with an exam style question.

To link with my previous lesson ('An introduction to Slavery), this lesson starts with an autonomously moving spotlight over a picture (of raw cotton) to hook pupils into the lesson and link to one of the causes of slavery. Pupils begin the lesson through listening to a description of the middle passage to help introduce the lessons theme. Pupils then write an inquiry question they would like answered by the end of the lesson. Main Task: Depending on your class the main task for this lesson could take many forms, some suggestions are: Pupils could work in teams and study evidence (12 pieces of evidence included) around the room to create a fact file on the experience of the middle passage on A1 paper (Prize for best one). Or pupils could work independently recording what they have learnt from the evidence in their books. A video clip from the show ‘Roots’ can then be shown (embedded) to help consolidate the tasks learning. Pupils will then have the knowledge they will need to answer their enquiry question and an exam style question at the end of the lesson which the teacher can then use to assess progress. Higher and Middle / lower ability version of sources included, with a peep sheet to prompt less able and a challenge sheet for more able. The purpose of this lesson is to develop pupils understanding of the Little Rock Nine for either KS3 or GCSE. The lesson begins with a choice of hooks / starters depending upon the personality of your class. 1. Reflection upon Bravery and standing up for what is right. 2. A Reflection upon their pupils first day at school and if older pupils have a responsibility to look after pupils in lower years. Pupils are introduced to the Little Rock Nine through some written information and a short video (embedded) Pupils reflect upon a visual source of Elizabeth Eckford using their knowledge to interpret and infer from the source. The main task involves pupils using a card sort to assess the positive and negative impacts this had upon the Civil rights movement. A judgement line can then be used to assess progress. Pupils consolidate with another video before demonstrating their knowledge through an exam style question - although this could be set as Homework (included). I have also included an additional section of resources such as a modern day link video (embedded) and discussion of learning beyond the classroom. This lesson is focused upon the changed implemented under Nixon, namely, The Nixon Doctrine & Vietnamisation. No textbook is required I have included all resources / WAGOLS / differentiated sheets / video clips etc … Lesson begins with a recap of Johnson leaving office and Nixon’s approached to the War. students study each approach to then complete a starter sheet and reflect upon the impact each one may have on the War (Positive & Negative). students are then introduced to the Nixon Doctrine where they will watch a video clip (embedded) also more video links provided in the description - students are then enabled to to explain how this may affect the war and public opinions of the war. Students are introduced to Vietnamisation though various sources and a definition (clip included to watch from YouTube). students then engage in a discussion based activity to argue how different people may interpret the process of Vietnamisation (North Vietnamese General - US General - South Vietnamese Politician - Us citizen). The rest of the lesson is based around exam practice and technique i have included sources/ interpretations / structure support / differentiated source / interpretation evaluation sheets for less able & WAGOLS for ALL of the following questions: 1. How useful are sources A and B for an enquiry into… 2. What is the main difference between the views of interpretation 1 and 2. 3. Suggest one reason why interpretations 1 and 2 give different views about the extent to which Vietnamisation was a success. WAGOLS are evaluated to show student how and where marks have been gained. further advice can be found in the description of the presentation / easily enough for more than one or two lessons.
