Descriptive Writing - Thinking out of the box

This presentation goes through possible scenarios/descriptive writing tasks and gets students to think about taking ownership over their writing and making it as creative as possible. This is all done through image stimuli. The first few slides asks students to assess strengths and weaknesses on another student response, to use these slides you will also need to copy your own student response.

This planning sheet can be used to plan any form of writing. There is a section on there for making inferences too, i.e. if students are responding to something that they have read. This really allows students to understand the importance of planning and really helped my lower ability learners in terms of giving them a really structured way of doing so.

I'm currently trialing a poem a day with my KS4 groups. I'm using structured questions and a random poem, just to get them used to dealing with poetry unseen. Here is a poem called 'Baggage', along with questions on a PP slide.

4 questions that gradually become more difficult to use as a stimulus for group work discussion Students should explore possibilities, which is a skill they need for the Literature syllabus Questions can be stuck on A3 paper, so that students are able to write their answers around the questions All questions are based on Stave 1

Has images and spellings on it linked to Roald Dahl's 'The Witches'; however these can be easily changed to suit any novel being studied
