WHY Number Talks?
Encourage students to discuss their answers with their peers.
How did they reach the answer?
What were they thinking in their head?
What facts did they already know that helped them?
What did they see?
Number talks will get your students engaged in meaningful mathematical conversations that will increase their ability to reason mathematically as well as develop their computational fluency skills and their ability to think flexibly about numbers.
When students engage in this short daily activity, they communicate with their peers in a safe environment where it’s okay to not be right all the time. It’s okay to learn from each other. They learn to discuss various strategies and the effectiveness of those strategies. They begin to take risks.
Use the powerpoint to model the different ways that we can visualise a given number. This set comprises the numbers 1-2, and shows the number
in a ten frame
written as a word
using hands
domino patterns
dice patterns
subitising patterns
clipart version of the number
tally marksThe powerpoint is editable so that you can change to the text that you require, and then save as a PDF prior to printing.

The purpose of persuasive writing is to convince readers to share your opinion or take a particular action.
To try and make your readers agree with your opinion, you build an argument based on the logical appeals of reason and evidence. You may also add emotional appeals to persuade your readers and support claims. An emotional appeal tries to use a reader’s fears, hopes, wishes, or sense of fairness to sway their opinion.
In order for students to become effective persuasive writers, it’s important they investigate how purpose will influence the persuasive strategies they use in their writing. Start by reviewing the different purposes of persuasive writing as a class. Analyze persuasive texts, or other forms of media, and then identify the purpose for the text.

These labels are created to fit the 1- 12 drawer rolling carts that many teachers use to keep organized. In the US they are available from Michael’s and in Australia they can be bought in Kmart or Spotlight stores.
There are two styles, one with rectangular labels, the other to use with those drawers that are angled slightly at the sides. I included some already made labels (These are just the labels that I used and thought I needed), but I have included a set of editable labels in each design. I have also included the fonts that I used in the following slide.
HOW TO USE
PDF Version: Simply download the file, print using a colored printer, cut and laminate for durability. Printing on cardstock also helps to make them last longer. Attach your signs to the drawers using double sided tape, glue gun or blutak. In some trolley designs, you may need to put a hole in the sign for the drawer knob to be reattached after the sign has been applied.
HOW TO EDIT THE POWERPOINT VERSION
These made to measure labels are EDITABLE which means you can type in your desired text to suit your individual organisational needs. You will need to have Microsoft Powerpoint installed on your computer to open and edit this file.
Once unzipped from the download file, open the PowerPoint and in order to use the same font it must be installed onto your machine. A set of blanks is provided for you to create and entire set using the font of your choice. Simply duplicate the slides and edit the text boxes with your desired fonts and labels. You can bold your font, increase or decrease the size, underline… the freedom is yours.
When finished, print the slides that you need, or save all as jpeg files and then print each individually as needed

Do you need a set of Real life Pictures for Number talks in your classrooms?
Then this is the set for you
The value of using authentic images in your math lessons and rotations-Mathematics educators have long known that engaging students in visual representations of mathematics is extremely helpful for their learning. Utilizing imagery and visual memory can be very helpful when learning mathematics such as proportions. A single picture can help a student define and remember a concept, or it can even help them to recall the steps required to compute a problem.
-Students need daily opportunities to engage with mathematical ideas in purposeful and playful ways.
-They provide time for authentic, independent practice that connects to what they have learned through whole class quality instruction.
-Students need opportunities to develop the core and curricular competencies. Through the ‘doing’ of the mathematics, students will be building their confidence of themselves as mathematicians and seeing the connection of mathematics to their world.
-They give students choice, which increases motivation and fosters a positive disposition towards Mathematics.
-They give teachers an opportunity to meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide explicit instruction, engage in guided math, and/or have conferences.
The images are divided into 5 sets with teaching suggestions for each one.
-Set 1- Arrays and Multiplication. Tesselations
-Set 2- Working mathematically
-Set 3- Growing Patterns
-Set 4- Estimation
-Set 5 - Shape and Design
-Set 6- Graphing and interpreting data from images
-Set 7- Coordinates and mapping
What people have said about this product

"We used this resource to get students in a routine during the beginning of math sessions during virtual learning. I post the picture and ask the students, “What do you see?” They describe the objects, count them, talk about patterns and many other mathematical concepts and ideas. It’s great to get kids talking to each other and warmed up for the day. "
“This is a great and engaging resource to review Math concepts!”
"This was very helpful but also challenging "

“I have a cluster classroom so this ws great. I put it on Goggle classroom, and let my students use it when they had free time. It was very engaging, and fun.”
“We’ve been using these as warm up questions. They love that it isn’t directly “math” (equations) and I love that they get really into solving these and getting their brains thinking outside of the box! Thank you!”
“I use these for early finishers. They enjoy solving the puzzles. They are practicing but do not feel they are doing extra work.”
“Great Morning discussion or showing it during transition and discuss and they are lining up or when they are getting ready to go home at the end of the day. My students will stop doing what they are doing and they will listen to the question and hate when someone answer without raising their hands.”
