A great resource, linked to oral practice at KS5 for the topic of 'Les vacances'. Presentation guiding students through the process of peer observation of behaviour in group work and the effects on learning. Based on the activity in the excellent 'The Teacher's Toolkit' by Paul Ginnis. Used to great effect, a real behaviour-for-learning changer and very insightful for students. Definitely worth doing! I use every year with each class to install values and bring attention to the ripple effect of any behaviour that doesn't support learning. The feedback makes much more of a difference coming from their peers rather than me! Use alongside a group activity (for example a reading text and questions), and allow time at the start of the lesson for an explanation and a full reflection at the end (15 minutes+).

Excellent resource, outlining in four short paragraphs a series of Italian traditions and customs for New Year's Eve. Document includes a short text, a series of questions in English to consolidate understanding, answers to the questions and helpful vocabulary. The text is adapted from a longer article online (link on worksheet) and can easily be lengthened if not challenging enough for group. I use this with a year 7 and a year 10 Italian class, both several months into their Italian language studies. Acts as a great springboard for further discussion and cultural comparisons, and introduces them to a range of authentic vocabulary. A perfect first lesson back in January, topical and interesting.

Excellent resource, adored by students, to track and chart progress. Set up to be used for grammar ('er', 'ir', 're', modal verbs and so on), but can be adapted to suit any learning objectives. Students are assigned a character and given a grid at the start of term, or half-term, depending on how many objectives you wish to cover. After each objective has been covered, they circle the traffic light for that square to represent their confidence and understanding - green for very confident, amber for okay but a little unsure, and red if they feel they still don't understand. Very useful for teacher to glance over, to set activities in class as groups, or differentiated homework / prep. A fabulous insight into the progress of students individually and as a class that is subtle and fun for them. In my experience they are very honest too as only they and you see the grid, rather than asking for thumbs or coloured cards to be held up in class.

Huge time saver! Incredibly useful! Took a day to make! Can be printed as individual A4 pages (or blown up into A3) for French 'Word Wall' display. Very useful to direct students to for help with their own work and to encourage independent learning and flow. Can also be printed as an A4 or A5 booklet for students to have an individual copy for reference in class and at home. Created as when directing students to dictionaries to help source their own verb conjugations, confusion would often ensue as no English translations / pointers on when to use each tense were given to help students who were unsure. Really helps to drive independence and so helpful when teaching as time can be spent supporting LA / pushing HA when circulating, rather than having to constantly be translating verbs to help students continue with their work. 30 pages in total. Verb tables - 24 pages! Present, perfect, imperfect, near future, simple future and conditional tenses for 12 key verbs in French and in English. Can be printed and used as a worksheet or worked on electronically and printed for a great display. Set up for KS2 / KS3 'Je me présente' module but can easily be adapted. Used successfully with KS4 to discuss healthy lifestyles and KS5 to display opinions on global warming and environmental challenges. A huge time saver!

Excellent cultural resource, working on Le Tour de France. Text outlines the competition, the history of the competition and the course that the cyclists follow. Support LA learners with vocabulary sheet if required and stretch HA learners with a ‘Challenge’ extension activity - a mini research project into the significance of the different jerseys. A French website is suggested as a first access point. A brilliant lesson that can branch off in to many different areas (researching winners, the different regions that the course crosses, anti-doping etc.) depending on level of group.

Excellent resource, based on the popular BBC show 'Only Connect'. Works well as a starter, plenary or as a game to review learning. Students are asked to apply critical thinking skills to make links between fourteen different French items of vocabulary in each game. The first game focuses on colours, days of the week, numbers 0-5 and 21-30. The second game uses vocabulary linked to types of transport, clothes, places in town and animals. The third game is based on vocabulary linked to the weather, body parts, members of the family and different drinks. Instructions for teachers on each slide, fully animated with all answers and hyperlinks. Fully differentiated. Slides at the end of the PowerPoint are set up to input own vocabulary too. Can be used in lots of different ways! Always great fun!

Pâques, une fête très chocolat: Excellent lesson on Easter, touching on history, tradition and chocolate, based on a French text from the ‘1 jour 1 actu’ French website (full link on top of worksheet). Questions include multiple choice answers based on comprehension, linguistic challenge (such as selecting synonyms) and research tasks that can be developed as fully as teacher wishes (particularly useful for KS5). A second worksheet asks students to reflect on a video on how chocolate is made (link on worksheet) and to answer a separate set of questions to work on their listening comprehension. For KS5 learners, I recommend playing the video straight through twice after modelling the first answer. KS4 learners would benefit from the video being paused several times to allow them to note down the answers. A full A4 page of vocabulary (divided into paragraphs to match those in the text) is provided to support learners who would benefit from this help. Increase challenge by withholding from learners. As I did not author the text I have not included it on the worksheet, however the link for the text and for the video are both there. If students have their own devices, they can access an electronic copy in class, or a paper copy could be printed for them by teacher. Great fun to teach and fully differentiated!

Great lesson, based on Expo 3 (Rouge) spread of 'Ça ne va pas'. Builds on prior knowledge of illnesses and injuries in the present tense, and works on using reflexive verbs with être in the perfect tense to describe problems with the body. Lesson begins with a re-cap of various body parts, then moves on to ask students to match the first and second half of sentences describing injuries in the past tense to five images. Reading, mini whiteboard translation and writing activities follow, with 'être' song to re-cap verb in present tense if teacher wishes. Splat game to review learning at the end of the lesson. A bundle of five slides, linked to the Work and Education module of the GCSE course. The first slide is a poster of rules from a French school. Students are asked to translate as many as possible a given time limit. Challenge is to think of any others that are not mentioned that students would expect to see in their own school. Forms a good basis for cultural discussion (for example in terms of uniform or how rules are phrased). The second slide presents two tables (24 items of vocabulary), drawing links between rules and uniform. The conditional tense is introduced alongside negatives and could easily be extended to forming the conditional and other negative forms. The third slide introduces positive and negative opinions about uniform, asking students to translate and categorise those given before forming their own for a debate / discussion on the fourth slide. The fifth slide lists excuses regarding household chores, asking students to translate those given and think of their own.
