This is a lesson activity that I designed for my year 10 grade D-B class. The worksheet can be printed in A4 then photocopied to A5 and stuck in student books. Task boxes can ticked as students complete tasks. The Natural History Museum (London, UK) website is excellent. Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com

Adobe detailed guide to visual literacy

This Adobe white paper is an absolutely excellent guide to visual literacy with references. This document provide a guide to presenting data in an effective way - a concern for statisticians, scientists and managers. Also check out Edward Tufte for his thoughts on this topic.

This is a detailed 2 page glossary that is used as part of a lesson on polarity. It is excellent for getting students to use and understand key terms and goes beyond what is needed just to pass the exams. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

Revision aids for science 1 - Mnemonics

(1)
I am putting together a series of science revision resources designed to improve success in science exams. This resource includes mnemonics for cell cycle, cis-trans isomers, enthalpy, food tests (buret etc) and protein structure. I will provide a student-friendly powerpoint for later in the year. Feedback to my TES inbox please. Let me know mnemonics that you would like to be included and I will add these to my list. The YouTube videos link to nemonic songs. I adapt the YouTube reactivity series nemonic to get more able students to include metals such as Tin and Platinum.

Metals, alloys, acids, bases labels for card sort

(0)
I have created a laminated chemicals, elements and compounds cardsort that is colour coded and kept in A4 plastic wallets. Red = acid, blue = alkali / CO2 / water, grey = metals, non-metals = elemental colours where possible. I make 6 lots of these so that I have one set per table. They can be used to: (1) make word equations (and by extension symbol equations), (2) sort metals from non-metals, (3) sort acids from bases (4) sort elemental metals from alloys. Many other uses also. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Answering in class student tracker - good for AFL

This is a tracker that I designed so that I can clearly see which students are not answering up in class so that I include them more during whole class AFL questions and answers. This is an A4 page with 3 tables that are cut out and stuck in the back of student books. I check them when marking books. Feedback to rowan.savage@hotmail.com

Countdown strategies 1 - music

There are a variety of ways to bring a class to a standstill so that you have their attention. A really exciting way is to use a song or tune that also provides a stimulating learning environment. Using a tune that lasts for around 3 minutes provides excellent pace. This strategy works particularly well with noisy, boisterous or simply excitable classes. This PowerPoint provides links to YouTube clips that you can use for a variety of classes and topics. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

In this lesson plan you will find the SOC codes to import our quiz and our short answer task to your Socrative room. These great revision activities that you can use with the whole class as starters, plenaries, or to consolidate learning. This links to the GCSE Chemistry topic of electrolysis.

Group 2 nitrates and carbonates - AS Chemistry

(1)
This is an engaging AS Chemistry lesson on the group 1 and 2 nitrate and carbonate decompositions and has grades C to A. The starter is fire writing using sodium nitrate solution. Please read CLEAPPS safety and Royal Society of Chemistry advice on this compound and the practical. For grade C students describe the reactions. For grade B students explain the decompositions and for grade A they evaluate their answers. An extra activity such a diamond 4 could be included for students to rank their answers. Please rate this resource and leave feedback.

History of the cell ICT lesson plan

(0)
This is a lesson plan for an ICT research skills lesson on the history of the cell. 2 timelines are given - one easy and one that is more challenging. Students present their research at the end of the lesson. Alternatively they could present their findings in a second lesson. The presentation skills lesson (see my other resources) could be modified and incorporated into this lesson to structure the presentation. Feedback to my TES inbox please.

Metals trump cards and data sheet - develop higher level thinking at KS3 and GCSE

(1)
This is a set of resources that are used in metals lessons at KS3 and GCSE. The metal trump cards cover 12 metals including 3 alloys. The superplastic alloy has been included to challenge students. Each card lists key information such as elemental symbols, properties and metal uses. They can be used in a variety of lessons such as when students need to design a car for the future (see my other resources). Please rate this resource and leave feedback.
Learning journey tube map - excellent assessment for learning tool and ideal for revision

Learning journey tube map - excellent assessment for learning tool and ideal for revision

(0)
There are two resources - an example lesson and a tube map slide that is easy to modify. This is a student friendly alternative way of sharing learning outcomes with students at the start of lesson and assessing their learning at the end. The first slide can be shown to the students. Each tube line represents a different part of the lesson. The learning outcomes start easier and then become more challenging as the lesson progresses. The second slide can be printed and used as a personal learning checklist for the lesson and as an assessment for learning tool. Students rate their confidence on a scale of 1 to 5. 1 is low and 5 is high. They can share this score with the teacher using their fingers. They write this score in the left of the two boxes at the start and in the right of the two boxes after a learning activity.

AFL Strategies 2 - Number line

(0)
I am putting together a series of AFL strategies and I will be adding to this series over the coming year. This strategy is a new idea that I have had using a number line that I initially created to help students during practicals. I have tried this out with Year 7 classes and they absolutely loved it! A photo of the number line in my classroom (laboratory) is provided to give an idea of how it might look. Please provide feedback to my TES inbox. I will amend this with suggested improvements later in the year.
