I have been Head of RE, Pastoral Lead and Head of PSHE & Citizenship in my 19 year teaching career. I am currently Head of PSHE & Citizenship at a large secondary school 11-18. My shop includes: PSHE and Citizenship sessions, Assemblies, Tutor Time activities SMSC, Fundamental British Values and Religious Education. They are fully resourced RE or Citizenship lessons, worksheets or 15 minute assemblies/tutor time PSHE sessions suitable for 11-18 and some can also be used for younger audiences.

This is a 10-20 minute assembly about the important issue of homelessness in the UK. It was originally a Year 8 tutor time PSHE session but it can be used as an assembly or easily lengthened for a whole PSHE or Citizenship lesson for KS3-KS5 (Ages 11-18, Years 7-13). It has two downloaded video clips that will never disappear and one centres around StreetLink and the other on homelessness in the UK’s second biggest city, Birmingham. It also includes: Why people become homelessness What can we do to help Number of homelessness children in the UK Streetlink & Birmingham homelessness video The students reacted very positively to this session and began a campaign to raise money for the homeless. This fits into the PSHE, SMSC, FBV and Citizenship Statutory guidance.

This is a 15-20 minute assembly on the role of an MP. It has some specific information about Birmingham but this can easily be adapted to include your own MP by following the website and instructions in the Notes section. This was originally a Year 10 Citizenship tutor time session but could easily be lengthened to last a whole lesson. It covers the definition of an MP, their role and tasks, the importance of democracy, the structure of parliament, what issues young people may be struggling with today and an introduction to ‘Make Your Mark 2022’ with the Youth Parliament. Students reacted very well to this presentation. It fits into the PSHE or Citizenship curriculums or can be used for a KS3, KS4 or KS5 (Ages 11-18 Years 7-13) assembly or whole school session on Fundamental British Values.

This is a 10-20 minute assembly on Storm Arwen and the devastation it has caused throughout the UK. It was originally used for a whole school tutor time Citizenship session at the start of December 2021 to explore the issues it raises. It is suitable for KS3, KS4 & KS5 (Ages 11-18, Years 7-13) and includes: A summary of Storm Arwen How it effected people in the UK Discussion questions about electricity cuts, importance of helping the community and whether the UK should be better prepared for extreme weather conditions How this connects to Fundamental British Values and mutual respect How this connects to the UN Rights of a Child Reflection slide about people who are suffering or have died as a result of the storm A downloaded video that will never disappear about the storm on the news Quotes about weather to discuss and reflect upon Links for further study The PowerPoint is narrated but this can easily be changed by deleting the icon on each slide if you would prefer to add your own narration or leave it for teachers to deliver. This could easily be adapted with written tasks to last a whole lesson if required. This fits into the Citizenship, PSHE and FBV Curriculums and can be used as an effective summary. Students reacted very positively to this session.

This lesson can last from 60-90 minutes and contains an introduction to the AQA Religious Studies A (8062). It focuses on information about exam technique for the Christian Belief section of the exam paper. It fits in to the PSHE curriculum and the new RSE and Health Curriculum. This is a 10-20 minute assembly about the refugee crisis in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. It is suitable for KS3, KS4 & KS5 (Ages 11-18, Years 7-13, Grade 6-12) and has been used for a tutor time Citizenship session for the whole school. It focuses on: What is a refugee? Summary of Ukranian refugee crisis What the UK are doing to help Organisations that are helping Downloaded video (that will never disappear) from the news explaining how some refugees are facing delays to get in the UK Downloaded video (that will never disappear) about an 11 year old boy who travelled 750 miles from Ukraine alone to reach his family. Debate question regarding the £350 a month the UK government will give to anyone taking in Ukranian refugees How this connects to Fundamental British Values How this connects to the UN Rights of a Child Reflection and discussion points throughout Extra links so students can research further (mainly for online platforms etc or you are using it for a longer lesson) Links to newsround and bbc news website for a look at the news today. Logos, pictures and photos used throughout for visual cues and learners. This session is narrated but this can easily be changed by deleting the icon on each slide if you would prefer. There are no written activities but this could easily be adapted to a whole lesson for Citizenship, Social Studies or can be used as a whole school resource. This is a 15 minute presentation about blood donation to encourage students to think about donating when they are older and the current need for blood in the NHS. It covers statistics, quotes from donors and their recipients as well as reasons why blood donation is important. It has two short video clips that engage the students well in learning about this important health issue and are downloaded so they will never disappear! There are discussion questions but no written tasks as this is meant for a quick overview in tutor time or similar. It can be shortened or lengthened according to the length of the session. This covers the new RSE and Health Curriculum statutory guidance and can be used in PSHE or Citizenship lessons as well. This is suitable for KS3, KS4, KS5 and possibly KS2. Ages 9-18.

This is a 60-90 minute lesson for RE, Citizenship, SMSC, FBV or PSHE. It covers what MPs do, why students should write to them and outlines how to write an effective letter. This lesson belonged to a topic of Protest and this ends the topic with students writing their own letter of protest to their MP about something they feel is important in their local area. Suggested topics are given, written and discussion tasks included, a youtube clip that is downloaded that will never disappear and a section on emotive language and why this is important in letters of protest to MPs. There is a handout that accompanies the lesson to show students a model letter and allow them to have the selection of emotive language features in front of them while they write the letter. You will need to change the school address and MP’s details in the letter and the powerpoint to make it totally relevant for your students. This contributes to Citizenship education and was originally an RE lesson which was very well received by both the MP and the students. It is suitable for KS3 - KS5 (Ages 11-18, Years 7-13) and was originally a Year 9 lesson in the topic of Protest.

This is a 60-90 minute lesson on Social Action by taking a detailed look at the Birmingham Pub Bombings in 1974 and the Birmingham Six who were unlawfully imprisoned. This was originally a Year 10 Citizenship lesson but is suitable for upper KS3 - KS5 (Ages 14-18, Years 9-13) and could be part of the Religious Education, PSHE or Citizenship curriculum. It is also relevant to the law, British Values and SMSC provision. It focuses on Christianity and the work of food banks and street pastors. This session can also help towards the AQA Religious Studies A GCSE in the Christian Practices paper but does not have any specific exam focus. This was to inform the students about what was going on in the rail strikes, teach them the difference between public and private sector workers and give room for debate about industrial action. This could easily be lengthened to an hour’s lesson by holding a more formal debate. It is suitable for KS3-KS5 (Ages 11-18, Years 7-13, Grades 6-12) and can be used as an assembly or part of the Citizenship, PSHE, FBV, SMSC or tutor time programmes. This also covers the energy crisis, cost of living and the new laws that are now in place from this date. This has two downloaded short videos and partly focuses on the issue of saviour siblings. It includes discussion activities, information and a plenary quiz. There are no written activities but this can be easily lengthened for a whole PSHE lesson. This is suitable for KS3 - KS5 students (Years 7-13, Ages 11) and links to the new RSE and Health Curriculum.
