Could be used in a guided reading session or as an independent reading task.
3 x Comprehensions based on chapter one (The Reader of Books) of one of the greatest books ever written for children, Matilda!
A landscape comprehension with two columns and space for answers. 14 questions worth 20 marks. Plus a reading challenge task.
Portait comprehension with the same 14 questions as above, but with no space for pupils’ answers.
A more detailed 2 - part comprehension containing 2 x 20 questions worksheets awarding 25 marks per comprehension.
Could be used as independent tasks, alongside a whole class read or as an aid to guided reading.
Pupils have to read through a chapter from Chapter One and find the mistakes, which consist of:
• Contractions (for example: theyll = they ’ ll )
• Missing capital letters
• Missing full stops
16 questions worth a total of 20 marks.
Pupils may write on the worksheet so is ideal for use as an independent task.
Could also be used as a teacher prompt sheet when reading the first chapter in guided reading.

Two different Comprehension worksheets suitable for Year 5/6
1 - Ten questions on chapter one plus a vocabulary challenge. Can be stuck in pupils’ books for independent work. Two sets of questions per A4 sheet.
2 - 14 questions and a dictionary challenge on an A4 sheet.
Pupils answer a range of comprehension questions on an A4 landscape worksheet, with 20 marks possible.
There is also a reading challenge based on favourite phrases from chapter one, which could be used to stimulate further work or displayed on the Working Wall.
Pupils can do this activity independently and will require the book or copies of chapter one.
Pupils have to read a paragraph from chapter one and change the verb tense from present to past tense.
The challenge is to carry on the story using past tense.
Class discussion on the effect of changing the tense is recommended before attempting the activity!
This is a homework task for primary aged pupils who are learning about schools of the past. The task is to interview an older person and find out about their childhood and schooldays - to compare them with modern schools and children nowadays. Pupils could interview a grandparent, parent or other relative, or even a good family friend – the older, the better!
Pupils are given a few questions to start the interview - then it is up to them to think of their own.
A4 worksheet with 2 actiivities. Firstly, pupils have to complete the missing letters of 10 named gases. Secondly, pupils research into 2 gases and write notes on their properties.
Could be used as research homework.
This is an A4 cloze procedure activity based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood. All the missing spaces must be filled with adjectives of the pupil’s choice. It could be used with Year 3 or 4.
It could be a homework task to reinforce the use of good adjectives in writing or as a reading / word level task in class.
The extension task asks the pupils to carry on the story using their own amazing adjectives!

Dilemma - A boy (Tom) is accused of shoplifting and must decide whether to tell the truth or protect his friend (Katie)

Pupils are asked to write a persuasive argument which either supports zoos or is against zoos. I have included a series of bullet - pointed techniques which can be used as criteria for success and to help the pupils with their writing.
Also included are a series of free images / posters about zoos.

This resource consists of :
1 - an original acrostic poem which could be used as a stand alone example of this form of poetry, to be read aloud or used in guided reading.
2 - an A4 sheet with 10 questions which concentrate on the figurative language used in the poem. This could be used as a whole class reading activity or an independent task.
3 - an answer sheet, with marks awarded up to 12 marks.
4 - In addition to the main comprehension, there is a challenge task and extra challenge task!
This is a humorous, child - friendly 30 - 40 minute musical play with 10 separate scenes. It tells the story of Christopher Columbus’ first voyage to find a westward rout to the ‘Indies’.There are 6 main parts, 21 speaking parts altogether and other singing and dancing roles that will easily accommodate a class of 30. It can be practised and performed as a whole class or, as part of drama activities, in groups. Pupils will learn all about the conditions for sailors in the 15th century, the reasons why the voyage was so important and the story of why Columbus became known for discovering ‘The New World’.
However, the accent in this play is most definitely FUN!!! There are jokes, an S-Factor scene (giving opportunities for pupils talents to be showcased), magicians, singing, dancing and slots where you can insert your own class’s ideas!!!
If performed as a whole class play, it would take two or more weeks of rehearsals and learning the parts before delivering a performance. Alternatively, it can be used as a group reader for a group of 6 children, with the pupils switching roles and playing the roles of more than one character.
Useful for topic - based literacy lessons. Could also be used to stimulate non fiction writing.
First comprehension has detailed non fiction text followed by 10 questions.
Second comprehension consists of 20 cloze procedure missing words.
Third and fourth comprehensions look at the human ear and are both on the same A4 worksheet - cut in half to differentiate.
Suitable for Years 4-6 and helps to support the skill of note taking.
Pupils love the latest text message abbreviations so will enjoy working in pairs to find all the abbreviations contained in this worksheet.
It is a worksheet in 2 halves, the second activity is simpler and can be used to support pupils with SEN.
