Home Learning KS2/3 science project mixtures and dissolving

Easy science project for students to complete on dissolving sugar in a cup of tea. This is at 3 clearly differentiated levels (Easy, Medium, Difficult), so you can pick the one that is most appropriate to each student. Students can then peer assess one another, or self assess themselves using the checklist. The checklist will need adapting depending on what levels you are using for assessment! This would be fantastic to use at home too, as it is an easy scientific experiment for children to do. You just need a glass, water and sugar. They could expand on this by counting how many teaspoons of sugar dissolve in hot and cold water. They could find out what happens to the speed at which particles move in hot and cold water, and therefore why there is a difference. It is also a good opportunity to practice drawing particle diagrams.

A set of 5 potential lessons using Vitamin C tablets to launch film canister rockets. Excellent experiment, fully differentiated planning sheets to accompany it, and a mark scheme for the method. Really useful for planning all parts of an investigation for key stage 3 students. Could easily be used to practice skills with older year groups too.

Bungee jumping in Space - Gravity, Mass, Weight science project - Home learning potential

A powerpoint and sheet with a project homework, would be great to compliment a KS3 topic on forces/weight and then use for formative assessment as a level ladder is given too! Just changed whats on your level ladder. I have had some really great work back from this in the past! The ppt is to set the scene and generate enthusiasm mainly! This would be very suitable for an extended project for children to do from home as there are clear success criteria for them to follow!

Booklet that can be used to work from for the BTEC applied science unit 3 investigation into Calorimetry. Booklet in total took about 5 sessions to complete (tasks cover planning, carrying out investigation, processing data and write up!). Answer booklet provided with suggested student responses :) Lots of guidance for students on use of equations. You will have to help them create a results table (don’t forget units!). I put the headings for my results table as: Fuel Start Mass (g) Final Mass (g) Change in Mass (g) Molar Mass (mol) Heat of Combustion (kJ/mol)

Booklet that can be used to work from for the BTEC applied science unit 3 investigation into current, voltage and resistance. Booklet in total took about 5 sessions to complete (tasks cover planning, carrying out investigation, processing data and write up!) PPT included recapping basic ideas from KS3 and 4 on circuits. I did this in 2 sessions and including the card sort on circuit symbols, as they may be asked to interpret a circuit from a diagram in their exam.
