Cockburn is an inclusive community comprehensive school whose focus is on each individual, acknowledging both their rights and responsibilities. A strong care, support and guidance structure underpins a curriculum that seeks to develop the potential of every student. Academic rigour is valued at all stages and we strive to create learning experiences that provide challenge, engagement and achievement.

Our vision is to create opportunities within and beyond the curriculum to enable each student to develop their potential so that they become confident, independent and successful citizens. We seek to widen the aspirations of all students, to help them to reach destinations that are attainable and fulfilling.  We have high expectations of academic success and personal behaviour and believe that these are best achieved in a caring environment.  We promote respect and good manners; these are fundamental to our community.

We recognise the importance of each individual within the school community and the place of the school in the local community.

Our specialism enables students to become more interested and involved in the arts, both as part of the curriculum and as part of the extended schools programme. Our ethos involves developing students’ enjoyment and participation in the arts, building self-confidence and self-esteem in their creative abilities which often leads to a lifelong engagement in arts related activities. We provide many opportunities to see performances and exhibitions. We work to raise attainment and the quality of teaching and learning in our chosen arts subjects for all our students and develop ways to use the arts and new technologies to improve the whole curriculum.
