About St John's College
St John's College is a special educational needs school with provision for those with autism and autistic spectrum conditions. The college is located in the heart of Brighton, less than a mile from the shoreline. The school’s history dates back to 1886, when the founder Jane Borradaile opened St. John’s as a seaside convalescent home. It has been a school for children with disabilities since 1956. As of the most recent inspection there were 81 students on the school roll, taught from the age of 16.

The core goal of St. John’s is transforming lives – making a real and practical difference to the young people who access the college’s services and embracing the unique diversity they present. The college wishes to enable learners to achieve their goals and aspirations; to reach out and achieve the possible; to live their lives to the full.
A St. John’s practical education is combined with the upkeep of the school, such as the maintenance of the grounds and the cooking of meals. This is Work Based Learning — A new and innovative curriculum that links the central functions and services of our organisation with the learning that is provided every day.

These include vocational subjects such as construction, business administration and ICT, as well as skills for working life. Learners who attend the E12 teaching and learning space in an industrial unit experience a realistic work setting and improve their outcomes well.”
