Position:                                Chemistry Technician                                   

Responsible To:                   Head of Chemistry & Senior Science Technician 

The Chemistry Technician will ensure the effective provision of materials, equipment, and other resources for science lessons to facilitate the provision of high equality educational experiences to students. They will also support teaching staff within the Science Department.

 

Duties Include:

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Security, and Confidentiality and strictly adhere to Data Protection regulations, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person/line manager. 
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.
  • Understand and adhere to CLEAPSS, COSHH & College regulations.
  • Assessing, monitoring, and reviewing of both health & safety procedures and  information resources.
  • Organising, storing, and checking the condition of chemicals and equipment 
  • the safe treatment and disposal of used materials, including hazardous substances and responding to actual or potential hazards.
  • Giving health & safety advice to teachers and students.
  • Checking fume cupboards and pressure vessels; carrying out electrical and other safety checks, etc. 
  • To take advantage of any available training and professional development opportunities to keep up to date with current procedures and practices.
  • To deliver equipment to classrooms; collect, check, and return equipment to stores after lessons. 
  • To provide equipment and materials to support Chemistry practical teaching, including assembling apparatus and making up solutions (which may include caustic chemicals), collect check and return to stores after use.
  • The safe storage and accessibility of equipment and materials.
  • To prepare teacher demonstrations and assist practical classes as required.
  • To ensure adequate stocks and condition of glassware, goggles, bunsen burners etc. in laboratories. 
  • To trial practical activities.
  • To maintain laboratory equipment, apparatus and resources, carrying out (or arranging for) the repair and replacement as necessary. 
  • To assist the department with displays; open mornings, taster days; production of leaflets, posters, photographs etc.
  • Keeping laboratories, prep room, store cupboards safe and clean. 
  • Attend and participate in regular meetings when appropriate. 
  • To assume such additional responsibilities relevant to this position as the Headmaster may from time to time request.

 

Requirements:

The applicant must have:

  • Previous experience as a school science technician.
  • Have a good sense of humour.
  • Qualifications; Science GCSEs (or equivalent).
  • The ability to prioritise and to work to deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both verbal and written. 
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure.
  • Good understanding of CLEAPSS & COSHH.
  • Self-motivated, self-confident, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good time management, organisation, and administration skills.
  • Enjoy working to a high standard in a demanding environment.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Physically fit able to stand for long periods and carry up to 16 kg.
  • Reliable and highly conscientious individual with a warm and professional manner.
  • Approachable and measured in manner with the ability to form strong working relationships.
