About the School

Founded in 1932, St. Julian’s is a highly successful British international school for children aged 3 to 18. It is a unique and special place in character, history and location. Known for academic excellence, there are 1,250 students from more than 60 nationalities across four school sections: Pre-Prep (ages 3 to 5), Prep (5 to 11), Secondary (11 to 18) and Bilingual (6 to 15). The Pre-Prep School has a three-form entry with up to 15 pupils per class in Nursery going up to 18 in Reception.

The school is led by a team that consists of the Head, Bursar, Deputy Head (Teaching & Learning) & Secondary Principal, Deputy Head (Pastoral), Head of Pre-Prep, Head of Prep, Bilingual Principal, Director of Professional Learning and Director of Technology.

In the Pre-Prep School there is the Head of Pre-Prep and the Phase Leader who is responsible leading a EYFS team of teachers and teaching assistants to ensure all children are supported socially, emotionally and academically. There are also three Phase Leaders in the Prep School.

The children have lessons from specialist teachers for music, PE, computing, outdoor education and Portuguese. Across the Pre-Prep and Prep Schools, there are also teachers for Learning Support, EAL and a full-time Psychologist. The Primary Leadership Team consists of the Head, the two Deputy Heads and the Heads of Pre-Prep and Prep.

Complementing academics, the school focuses on personal skills development through our 6Cs: compassion, curiosity, communication, courage, collaboration and citizenship.

Google Apps for Education is used and all teaching and teaching support staff are given their own MacBook Air.

St. Julian's has been recognised for the third consecutive year as one of the top 15 private schools in Europe in the Schools Index published by Carfax Education, and for the second year running as one of the top 10 by Spear's.

We follow the National Curriculum for England leading to IGCSEs and the IB Diploma and Careers-related Programme. We are accredited by CIS, COBIS and HMC

Situated between Lisbon and Cascais, St. Julian’s enjoys an idyllic location framed by beaches and pinewoods. The School is about to embark on a €40 million building project over five years that will see significant enhancements to the existing site.

The role of Phase Leader (EYFS)

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced class teacher to be the Phase Leader in the Pre-Prep under the direction of the Head of Pre-Prep. The successful candidate will be classroom based and will have an allocation of 1-day per week for this role.

Key responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • To manage the day-to-day running of the team, ensuring that there is consistency and progression throughout the two year groups. 
  • To act as a highly effective role model, in classroom practice and in relationships with pupils and staff.
  • To be dedicated to a culture of collaboration and excellence by supporting, motivating and empowering colleagues in their roles as class teachers or teaching assistants.
  • To act with passion, enthusiasm and integrity and to foster an open and enjoyable climate for all.
  • To hold pupil wellbeing and pupil learning at the centre of all decision making.
  • To be the professional learning reviewer for some members of their phase.

Strategic Development

  • To support and drive forward the vision for their assigned phase, and to develop practices that reflect the ethos of St. Julian’s. 
  • To engage staff and pupils in reflective practices of evaluation.
  • To work collaboratively with other phase leaders, subject leaders and the Primary Leadership Team to develop strong systems of academic care across their phase.
  • To develop effective, constructive communication with staff.

Teaching & Learning

  • To work with subject leaders and the PLT to ensure engaging, progressive and meaningful learning opportunities are provided for all children in their phase.
  • To work with and support colleagues in facilitating child centred learning experiences during assemblies.
  • To work with the Learning Support and EAL departments in response to the needs of individual children within their phase.
  • Alongside the PLT, to monitor the quality of learning and teaching in lessons.
  • To develop and maintain opportunities for the development of learner skills and the 6Cs through the curriculum in their phase.

Pupil Progress

  • To monitor the academic progress of pupils within Nursery and Reception using data available and using support and intervention strategies to support individual students as appropriate.
  • To work with the class teachers, teaching assistants, PLT and other primary colleagues to monitor the wellbeing of the children across their phase.

Administrative Tasks

Within your assigned phase (and if necessary in collaboration with other phase leaders):

  • Playground supervision rota and/or climbing frame rota.
  • Chair staff meetings for phase.
  • Chair weekly briefing meetings or create weekly agenda.
  • Regular communication with staff and parents.
  • Contribute to the weekly newsletter, The Lighthouse, and other school publications.
  • Tracking of assessment data within their phase.
  • Regular reporting to the Head of Pre-Prep.

From Nursery (age 3+) to Year 11 (age 16+) St. Julian’s broadly follows the National Curriculum for England. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) embraces the two years of Nursery and Reception, ages three to five. Thereafter students progress through the Key Stages of the curriculum.
