Role Overview 

The College Counselor designs and directs a program of activities to assist students with college planning in 10th-12th grades including: academic preparation for college, meeting both graduation and college acceptance requirements, college searches, school and financial aid application, scholarship searches, testing, Counsel students to fully develop each student’s academic, career, personal, and social abilities and address the needs of special population students.  

Job Responsibilities

 

●       Provide academic and personal counseling on a drop in or scheduled basis.

●       Assist students, staff and parents in making use of counseling services.

●       Coordinate counseling information and record keeping.

●       Assist in scheduling and providing information about curriculum offerings in the program of studies to staff, students, and parents.

●       Counsels with students individually or in groups.

●       Preparation for transition of graduates.

●       Ensures accuracy of student transcripts, particularly transfer transcripts - coordinated with Admissions

●       Process academic/behavioral referrals from staff. Follow up with teachers and parents as warranted.

●       Assess new students academically and place them in appropriate classes. Students with special needs are referred to the learning support personnel for assessment and placement.

●       Monitor academic progress of students through coordination of mid-term progress reports, semester grade reports, and close contact with teachers. 

●       Schedule and facilitate parent conferences regarding academic progress.

●       Assist with the development of the master schedule; coordinate student's selection of courses and facilitate individual schedule changes. 

●       Regular coordination with administration

●       Coordinate the school services program of high school students. 

●       Engage small groups of students in projects, counseling, and other activities as warranted.

●       Collaborate with admin regarding the high school advisory program

●       Provide career counseling to all high school students in your caseload

●       Coordinate and send academic documents as required for university matriculation

●       Serve as a member of the HS Administrative Team.

●       Responsible for coordinating SAT, PSAT, TOEFL, and Pre-Ap and AP tests annually. (one counselor assumes these roles)

●       Host and coordinate university visits for students.

●       Conduct new student orientation; monitor progress of students on academic probation and conditional acceptance. 

●       Other duties that may, from time to time, be requested by the Principal

Family and Community Outreach

●       Communicates respectfully with parents and is sensitive to different families’ cultures and values.

●       Shows parents a genuine interest and belief in each child’s ability to reach standards.

●       Gives parents clear expectations for scholar learning and behavior for the year.

●       Promptly informs parents of behavior and learning problems, and also updates parents on good news.

●       Updates parents on the unfolding curriculum and suggests ways to support learning at home. 

●       Respond promptly to parents' concerns and make parents feel welcome in the school.

Other Responsibilities

●       Engage with community in after-school activities 

●       Engage with community in open communication

●       Supervision duties will be assigned

●       Perform other duties as assigned.
