Job Purpose

This non-teaching role supports Year Leaders to provide targeted help for students to overcome barriers to learning, ensuring success for all students.

The Organisation

Matthew Arnold is a thriving community school on the outskirts of Oxford, looking to appoint a School Counsellor. It’s an oversubscribed, inclusive 11-18 school with over 1,300 pupils, serving urban and rural communities. We focus on improving outcomes for all students, with a special emphasis on the progress of disadvantaged students.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work with Year Leaders to support students facing performance/attendance/behaviour issues, particularly social skills, anger management, and self-esteem
  • Keep detailed records of interventions and track progress with Year Leaders
  • Investigate breaches of school rules, support restorative processes
  • Collaborate with Year Leaders, SENCOs, School Counsellor, and AHT Student Welfare to provide effective support
  • Maintain records and confidentiality
  • Be part of the Child Protection safeguarding team
  • Assist in students’ educational and social development by offering curriculum and pastoral support
  • Liaise with outside agencies like CAMHS, Social Services, and Police to make referrals and ensure proper support
  • Oversee outside agency visits and provide feedback periods (e.g., Year 6 to 7, 7 to 8)
  • Offer support to parents/carers/families in collaboration with Year Leaders
  • Promote collaboration between families and school staff on students’ progress
  • Participate in relevant training, professional development, and supervision
  • Support students in the withdrawal room or after suspension to reintegrate
  • Assist with persistent absence issues
  • Work with students struggling to follow their timetables.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Deputy Year Leader
  • Support restorative reflection & restoration for students


Requirements

  • GCSE Maths and English grade C/4 or above
  • Knowledge and understanding of current issues in relation to young person wellbeing
  • Awareness of current Child Protection and safeguarding procedures, including legislation, and mental health and well-being initiatives
  • Knowledge and understanding of current issues in relation to young person wellbeing
