We are looking for a Head of Mathematics. This is an exciting opportunity to join Greenshaw High School and become an integral member of the Mathematics Department.

We would consider a start date at the beginning of the spring or summer terms, but our preference would be for a January 25 start.

 

About the Mathematics Department

Mathematics is a highly successful and very popular subject at Greenshaw with an excellent track record of exam results. Mathematics is the most popular A level at Greenshaw and we offer A-level courses in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Our Mathematics department have supported and inspired students who have gone on to study Mathematics at some of the most prestigious universities, including Cambridge, Bristol and Warwick. 

 

The Mathematics Department is staffed by a team of 17 specialist teachers, including highly skilled Co-ordinators for each Key Stage. A number of our Mathematics teachers also have whole school roles as Teacher Coaches; the Lead Teacher Coach for the school is a member of the Mathematics Department. The Mathematics team have a collegiate approach and are very supportive of each other. 

 

Students who struggle in maths are taught in small sets in years 7 and 8, to enable us to tailor the curriculum to their needs. We have a very flexible approach to setting for students in our 3-year Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 and we keep our arrangements for grouping students under constant review. 

 

The department is well-resourced; each teaching room has an interactive whiteboard and each teacher has their own iPad.

 

We look for opportunities to extend and inspire our students in Mathematics by arranging various enrichment activities, including entry into UK Maths Challenge competitions.

Main Responsibilities 

The main duties and responsibilities will include:

 

  • To provide strategic leadership for the development of KS3, KS4 and KS5 outcomes and curricula.
  • To lead and develop KS3, KS4 and KS5 coordinators in maths in addition to any other maths postholders.
  • To ensure that challenging programmes of study are in place to meet the needs of all students and that are informed by the Principles of Learning. Procedures should be in place to regularly review these programmes in light of lessons learned;
  • To embed the school’s Principles of Great Assessment by developing and maintaining the systematic use of formative assessment that informs teaching and learning;
  • To embed the school’s Principles of Great Assessment by developing and maintain valid and reliable forms of summative assessment that ensure inferences about student learning as accurate as possible;
  • To monitor and evaluate the progress of all students in Mathematics to ensure that different groups of learners are making appropriate levels of progress, and to take steps to address areas of concern as soon as possible;
  • To make sure that the highest standards of behaviour in lessons and around the school are being consistently maintained as defined by the Behaviour Policy;
  • To develop a common understanding and practice of the Principles of Great Teaching and ensure that these are used to evaluate the quality of teaching and learning;
  • To keep up to date records of the strengths and areas for development for individuals and the department, and to provide appropriate professional development to meet these needs via Subject Knowledge and Pedagogy sessions;
  • To administer all tasks necessary for the proper functioning of the department, including the monitoring and use of resources, the placing of orders, record-keeping and the organisation of examinations;
  • To be responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the department’s facilities, including the teaching classrooms, the resources and set texts;
  • To develop cross-curricular links as and when appropriate, such as through the use of direct vocabulary instruction and building students’ academic background knowledge through extended reading;
  • To share in the development of whole school policies and to support their implementation.
  • Undertake the role of form tutor
  • Have a teaching load in the region of 34 periods out of 50. (The School operates a 48 x 55-minute period, two week timetable cycle).
  • Commit to and support the school’s policy and practice in relation to safeguarding and child protection.
  • Undertake such other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably requested by the Headteacher in accordance with the relevant Pay and Conditions Document

About Greenshaw High School

Greenshaw High School is a highly over-subscribed 11 to 19 mixed comprehensive secondary school and sixth form situated in Sutton, South West London. Greenshaw High School is at the heart of a group of over twenty other schools in the Greenshaw Learning Trust. It was designated as a Research School in 2020, so we have access to some of the best research and evidence about how learning can happen most effectively.

With these supportive connections it is no surprise that Greenshaw has been popular with parents of children of all abilities and there continues to be a large demand for places.

We also relish our social responsibility to educate our students about important areas that do not fall neatly into subject categories, but that are critical to young people so they can be empowered citizens and intellectually capable. This includes the books we read in tutor time each morning, and a homework scheme we call The Big Ideas that Shaped the World.

Examination Results

A level results

Reviewing exam outcomes over the last few years of educational disruption presents challenges, but in the previous nine years of public exams our post-16 results were always significantly above national average rates of progress. In the most recent year of public examinations (2019), more than one in five of every A Level grade at Greenshaw High School was at grade A or A* with 73% of students achieving a pass at A*-C.

Over the last two years our students continued to progress well onto their next stage. The majority of our Year 13 students progressed to undergraduate courses (including medicine and law) at prestigious Russell Group universities, including Cambridge and Oxford Universities. We are also proud that our strong work in the creative arts continues to enable large groups of students to move on to foundation art courses, and directly into world leading institutions such as Central St Martins University for the Creative Arts.

GCSE results

Similarly, in Year 11 the proportion of our students securing firm destinations for post-16 education has been ahead of national averages. They have gone on to access a range of BTEC, A Level and other courses both at our school and other colleges locally. In 2019, Greenshaw High School celebrated the GCSE results achieved by students of the school, with 72% of all qualifications graded at 4 or better (what used to be the old ‘grade C’), and a quarter of all qualifications at grade 7 or higher (the old ‘grade A’).

Our Commitment to Your Career

As a Research School Greenshaw High School is committed to providing excellent CPD opportunities and career progression for all staff. We prioritise staff training and development and believe that all members of staff should have a thorough induction and an ongoing programme of training and professional development.

On each Wednesday lessons end an hour earlier, allowing our training to be done within the school day, rather than in twilight sessions. We call this part of the week ‘Professional Growth’, and is divided between departmental sessions on subject pedagogy, and broader professional enquiry in areas such as assessment, educational disadvantage and language. All colleagues are part of the whole school coaching programme where we review effective lesson structures and pedagogy, enabling all of us to continually reflect on our current teaching and always seek to improve.

Our programme of professional development has been recognised as excellent. It was awarded ‘Gold’ status by the Teacher Development Trust, a level of award that is rarely granted.
