The students at Ulink receive excellent academic and pastoral support and outstanding examination results are achieved. In addition, the school’s mission and vision is to create well-rounded and confident individuals who have experience in sports and the creative arts.

We currently seek to appoint a well-qualified, ambitious and experienced Teacher or current Head of Department to join the school from August 2025 in the role of Head of Visual and Performing Arts. This role has arisen due to the creation of a new, dedicated creative arts department that merges Music, Art and Drama. It is a rare and exciting opportunity to shape and direct progress and attainment in the arts. The Head of VPA will lead and manage a highly experienced department of six, including two Drama, Music and Art teachers. The Head of VPA will also be able to appoint Music, Art and Drama programme leaders from within that team once in post.

The successful candidate will be able to develop the use of teaching strategies which encourage a deep engagement with the subjects whilst focusing on excellent levels of achievement. They will be an inspirational teacher and will demonstrate high levels of commitment to the development of the creative arts at Ulink, including engaging with whole school priorities such as engaged classrooms and a rigorous curriculum.

The creative arts are thriving at the school but there are still more opportunities to unlock the talent of our students. As a school, we believe in the intrinsic value of the creative arts to enrich our students' participation in and understanding of the global society in which they live. Performance, creativity and well-honed academic skills are key components of how we approach these subjects. Many of our students go on to university to study a STEM related subject, so in addition we are committed to developing clear pathways for students whose interests lie in the arts.

There is a very active extra-curricular offering within the department, to which all members of the department are expected to contribute. We have several large-scale events, and the Head of Department will take a lead role in planning these. All VPA staff are expected to support the wider school extra-curricular programme in some way.

The salary will be commensurate with the post and will depend upon qualifications and experience.

About Ulink:

Ulink is a highly selective private school that offers programmes to Chinese students wishing to attend university abroad. We currently have 1600 students on our roll and employ 160 teachers.

We offer IG, A Level and IB, and each year the great majority of our students are accepted into leading British universities, with many also going to Hong Kong, Canada and the USA.

A typical Ulink student applies to join us after leaving the compulsory section of the Chinese system at the end of Year 9. Our school is heavily over-subscribed, and our students undergo rigorous testing to receive an offer from our school. Typically, for every ten applicants, only one will be successful.

The school is highly academic, and we are proud of our reputation as one of the leading schools for university placements not just in Shanghai, but in China.

Beyond our academic achievements we are dedicated to whole-student development through a broad curriculum and an extensive co-curricular programme. We have excellent student counselling services and a full calendar of lectures, competitions, sporting and social events.

We value the welfare and development of our teachers, and our school’s pastoral and academic services focus on their professional needs. We have a reputation for teacher development and have both internal and external PD programmes to ensure our teachers reach their potential. We recognise that IT, classroom facilities and other resources should be tailored to teacher’s needs so we ensure our teachers are able to focus on teaching with minimal distractions.

Despite our many achievements we are always looking to improve. The school recently embraced an innovative organisational structure that focuses resources on teachers, departments and year groups. School leaders are expected to serve the interests of the core of the school and are evaluated annually on this basis. We have also established a Research Hub within the school, and teachers and staff are encouraged to do paid research projects that help the school innovate and improve.

Overall, at Ulink our aim is not just to be a great school, but also to make a great contribution to society through the recognition of our methods and the legacy of our globally-minded students.

We aim to live up to our mission ‘Beyond east or west, for all humanity’.
