Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Health and Safety Officer to provide professional Health and Safety advice and support to Emanuel School.

You will establish and carry out an annual audit of the school’s facilities and departments, documenting findings and providing pragmatic support to maintain compliance with current Independent Schools Standards Regulations (ISSRs). You will also ensure the School is prepared for an Independent School Inspectorate (ISI) inspection.

In addition to this, you will manage the online health and safety training offering to all staff, deliver health and safety inductions, training and briefings, maintain the Training Needs Analysis and provide advice on further training requirements. You will also prepare the Health and Safety Officer report for the termly Health and Safety Committee meeting, covering updates on accidents and incidents, audits and inspections, fire safety and health and safety training.

You will need a working knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation and will possess a relevant Level 3 qualification in Health and Safety e.g. the NEBOSH General Certificate. You will also demonstrate a commitment to achieving a Level 5/6 qualification within a defined period of time and will exhibit membership of a recognised professional body, e.g. Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

You will also possess a proven track record within the education sector, or a similar complex and dynamic environment, along with practical experience of applying Health and Safety requirements in the workplace. Experience of delivering health and safety training, as well as relationship building and positive engagement with stakeholders is essential.

There is a genuine buzz at the school. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school.

Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining the school should expect to do so. There’s a strong sense of community and source of friendship. From the briefing to all staff, to the half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, there’s ongoing dialogue about the school’s aims.

We aim to look after our staff too. We have an appraisal scheme with a focus on the employee’s professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied working life, a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment. We wish you the best of luck with your application.
