Job overview

I am delighted that you have expressed an interest in working at St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed HLTA to work in our internal isolation room (which we call Reflect), supporting our students who are experiencing behavioural or pastoral difficulties.

As a Church of England Academy, which places the intrinsic value of individuals at the heart of decision making, where all students are inspired to ‘Live life to the full’, value one another and make the most of all learning experiences on offer, sometimes it is necessary to sanction young people if they negatively impact the community of the school. This is part of enabling them to grow into responsible, caring young people. As this is our aim, the manner in which we deal with incidents of negative behaviour must at all times be fair, consistent and proportionate.

In setting high standards and expectations for all our students, we aim to challenge and support all members of our community to ‘be the best they can be’. However, we accept that some students, sometimes, will need more help and support to help them meet our community standards, to this end our pastoral support is an essential element of our behaviour policy, raising standards and helping individuals to mature and improve their behaviour over time.

The successful candidate must have a high degree of emotional intelligence, be able to work alongside students to help them reflect on their behaviour and have the ability to set achievable targets which reduce the need for repeat referrals or the escalation of further sanctions. Without doubt, this is a role for someone with a fair but firm approach to daily interactions with students.

If you were to be successful in your application, you would be joining an Academy which strives for excellence. All in all, it is a wonderful place to work, learn and worship.

Our vision is ‘Lord Direct us to Live Life to the Full’, rooted in John 10:10. Whilst Learning, we are Inspired and develop our Values through Experiences as each member flourishes. We aim to raise aspirations, realise potential and develop well-rounded successful staff and young people. All staff that work at the Academy will need to subscribe to our ethos and values and seek to improve and develop their own practice and performance for the benefit of our students.

If you believe you can make a difference to our students and contribute to supporting the pastoral work of the Academy so that our students leave equipped to deal with the challenges they will face in the future, I would warmly welcome your application. Please submit the Support Staff application form, downloadable from the Academy website, along with a letter of application of not more than two A4 sides, detailing how your experience to date qualifies you for the post.

You are warmly invited to visit the Academy to discuss this further, or to arrange a telephone conversation regarding the post.

Please send all queries and completed applications via Mrs Nightingale, The PA to the Principal at knightingale@saintwilfrids. com The closing date for the receipt of applications is noon on Monday 23rd September 2024. I look forward to receiving your application.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs V Michael Principal

About St Wilfrid's Church of England Academy

ABOUT ST WILFRID'S C OF E ACADEMY

St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy provides a faith-led education for 11 to 18 year olds serving the Borough of Blackburn with Darwen and parts of Pennine Lancashire. We seek to provide an excellent education based upon a strong Christian foundation, as we develop all who work, learn and serve in our community. We benefit from purpose-built accommodation with excellent facilities. All in all, it is a wonderful place to work and learn. Visitors to St Wilfrid’s comment on the calm and purposeful environment, the friendly nature of our students and the welcoming nature of our staff.

We have a reputation for high academic standards. As a comprehensive school, we pride ourselves on providing teaching and learning which engages all students. The recent SIAMS inspector stated:

“Almost everyone describes the academy as being ‘one big family’ where all care for and help one another. This is understood to be the outworking of Christian values and teachings which underpin excellent behaviour and relationships. Students recognise in teachers a commitment to serve which for many is an aspect of their Christian faith. This prompts them to strive to provide the best and most supportive opportunities for all students. The result is exemplary academic and pastoral support which enables students to make good progress, attain excellent results and develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (SMSC 2016).”

MISSION STATEMENT

“St Wilfrid’s Church of England Academy sees education as an integral  part of the mission of the Church to proclaim God as Creator, Christ as Redeemer and the Holy Spirit as Inspirer of all that is good in human living.  The main purpose of the school is to provide an excellent education, both academic and social, in a Christian context, to enable its students to grow up to take their full part as citizens of this world and the next.”
