About Saint Ronan's School

Saint Ronan’s is a co-educational day and boarding school for around 450 boys and girls from 3 to 13 years. It was founded in 1883 and moved to its present site, Tongswood House, in 1946. In 2021 the school was named TES Prep School of the Year.

Children, teachers and parents are attracted to the school for its endearing family ethos, its old-fashioned charm as well as its modern outlook. We aim to blend the best of ‘ancient’ and modern.

Saint Ronan’s has a fine academic record, and an excellent reputation for music, sport, drama and art. The majority of children move on at 13+, mostly to Public Schools through Common Entrance or scholarship, and a significant number gain places at the local grammar school.

The school is set in the 250-acre Tongswood estate which proudly boasts some of the most picturesque Wealden countryside. The centrepiece of the estate is the imposing and impressive Tongswood House, a rambling Victorian mansion. The school puts the estate to extensive use, with a school farm, children’s gardens, and beehives in addition to the usual playing fields. In 2013 the school opened a Forest School in its 100-acre woodland.

The 2016 edition of the Good School’s Guide quotes “If Enid Blyton was still around, Saint Ronan’s would be exactly the sort of school she would be writing about”…..”Whilst it delivers on results it does so in a thoroughly gentle way”…. “Idyllic”

Tatler’s Schools Guides 2017 said "This Prep is a lively, eccentric place”…..”Brilliant!”…  “rigorous”.

The School has recently seen lots of exciting developments, including a brand new building for Art, Engineering and Computer Science and a complete refurbishment of the Science laboratories.
