Job overview

We are looking to appoint a Learning Mentor to join our dedicated SEN team. The position of Learning Mentor focuses on working with students who need additional academic support and mentoring according to their needs. You will support students in their learning, encouraging them to become independent learners and working with them to achieve positive outcomes. This role will involve supervising our brand-new SEN classroom and will play a vital role within our pastoral support system.

Already experienced in an SEN or mainstream education environment, you will be forward-thinking, engaging, and resilient and have an innovative style of mentoring, motivated by helping every student to reach their potential. The role will include one-to-one and small-group mentoring and support to improve academic progress and learning. In particular, you will be able to support in Maths and English and will be able to work proactively with students so that they are able to access the learning planned by teachers. You must be experienced in or have a willingness to work with different learning difficulties, as well as challenging behaviour.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Supervising our new SEN classroom within the department
  • Promoting the inclusion of all students
  • Helping students who are underperforming in their subjects and reluctant to learn, predominately in Maths and English, on a one-to-one basis outside the classroom
  • Providing learning activities for individuals and groups of students, differentiating and adapting learning programmes to suit the needs of the allocated students
  • Selecting and adapting appropriate resources and methods to facilitate agreed learning activities
  • Working with school staff to identify students who would benefit from mentoring, contributing to assessment and the identification of priorities and targets
  • Assisting and supporting students with special educational and general learning needs in order to develop their independence
  • Implementing strategies and supporting students in self-esteem and confidence-building activities
  • Listening to, encouraging and motivating students to resolve a range of issues that are creating barriers to learning
  • Drawing up agreed action plans with students, outlining the aims of the mentoring
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a minimum of two years’ experience working in an LSA, Teaching Assistant or school-based role
  • Be educated to a minimum requirement of Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) in GCSE English and Maths and be confident in supporting students in these subjects
  • Have experience of working with children in overcoming barriers to learning
  • Be compassionate and caring with an understanding of students with SEN
  • Have an interest in and passion for working with students with special educational needs
  • Promote self-esteem and confidence and help children to become emotionally healthy
  • Have high expectations of themselves, striving for the best in everything they do
  • Be an enthusiastic, committed and ambitious team player, open to learning and professional development
  • Be a strong presence and be hardworking, enthusiastic and committed

In return, Leventhorpe can provide:

  • Excellent facilities. To accommodate our expanding roll, Leventhorpe has just completed an extensive £12 million capital build programme, including a Science and Sixth Form block and a state-of-the-art Performing Arts and English block. In recent years, investment has included a £6 million Sports Complex (sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio, all-weather pitch and floodlit tennis courts)
  • A positive working environment in a heavily oversubscribed school with an excellent academic record and high standards. We place a strong emphasis on student learning and achievement
  • Exceptionally dedicated colleagues and enthusiastic students
  • Priority admission for children of staff after a qualifying period

Hours: 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 3.30pm, term time only plus 3 days

Salary: HCC – H5 Scale 9–14, actual salary £17,819 – £19,348, including outer fringe allowance (£13.38 – £14.53 per hour). Full-time equivalent salary: H5 Scale 9–14, £25,808 – £28,023 (including outer fringe allowance of £689 pa)

Leventhorpe School is an outstanding mixed, 11-19 secondary school and sixth form in the historic market town of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. The school became a Business and Enterprise Academy in August 2011. The intake at age 11 is drawn mainly from the pleasant and prosperous towns of Sawbridgeworth and Bishop's Stortford and from the surrounding villages. Demand for places in the school is very high with around four applications for each place. A good number of students travel significant distances to attend. In order to better meet the demand for places we have over the last five years expanded the roll from 6FE to 8FE.

Leventhorpe has just completed an extensive £12 million capital build programme including a new Science and Sixth Form block and a state of the art Performing Arts and English block. In recent years investment has included a £6 million Sports Complex (sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio, all weather pitch and floodlit tennis courts).

The school places a high priority on academic achievement as demonstrated at the last full OFSTED inspection when the school was graded “Outstanding” in each of the five categories. All staff are expected to play their role in ensuring the best possible outcomes for each and every student. Pass rates are 100% in nearly all subjects and percentages in the highest grades are well above the national average. Teachers, students and parents place a very high value on behaviour and care which helps to promote a highly cohesive and effective learning community.

Leventhorpe is the lead school for School Centred Initial Teacher Training within the Bishop’s Stortford Educational Trust (BSET) and has strong links with universities. The school hosts placements for trainees in a wide choice of subjects and is a long standing partner school with Cambridge University for PGCE.

Significant investment has been made in staff training to develop approaches to teaching and learning. There is a strong focus on developing high performing teams at different levels in the organisation. This has helped to form a culture with shared visions and values and a constant drive to improve learning opportunities for students.

Subject departments are organised on a Faculty basis. The responsibility for the preparation of schemes of work and for monitoring their delivery lies with the Head of Faculty, overseen by a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The school places a high value on assessment for learning and each student undergoes a termly assessment in each subject.

The school upholds traditional values of uniform, discipline, homework, punctuality and polite behaviour. Each of Years 7 – 11 is organised into mixed ability tutor groups and overseen by a Head of Year who oversees the academic and social development of students as they progress through the school. Form Tutors monitor their form members’ progress and liaise closely with pastoral heads.

In addition, each tutor group is assigned to one of eight Houses: Barnard, Cutforth, Fawbert, Lawrence, Moore, Newsom, Rivers and Wilkins. House Leaders organise a host of lively house events throughout the year such as talent competitions, quizzes and sporting events.

An extensive extra-curricular menu is available to all students. A comprehensive timetable of clubs offers something for everyone, from Rock Band to Astronomy club. A strong emphasis is placed on supporting students not just in lessons but also outside the curriculum. Staff and students' interest and enthusiasm in these groups are high. Music and drama productions are staged frequently and there is a particularly strong tradition of excellence in music. 10% of students are admitted on the basis of musical aptitude. Students are also encouraged to represent the school in a variety of sports.
