A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join a high-performing team of specialists in maths at Outwood Academy Portland. You will be joining an established and supportive team of 15 full-time teachers, of which two are members of our senior leadership team. We also have a team of support staff providing additional interventions to students, including one-to-one tutors and a specialist teaching assistant. You will be joining a team who work collaboratively and develop each other, leading to promotions both within the Trust and elsewhere.

Students perform well due to the excellent teaching that is relevant, exciting, innovative and transformational. Our results are above national average with positive progress and 52.3% 5+ and 68.7%+. We are proud to share our post 16 provision with Outwood Academy Valley at the Outwood Post 16 Centre in Worksop. For suitable candidates, there will be an opportunity to teach A level maths.

You will be ambitious to be the very best teacher, contributing to keeping the department outstanding.

Our key aims are:

  • To develop proficiency in all areas of numeracy including problem solving, verbal reasoning, reading and communicating mathematically; functional and creative skills.
  • To provide a varied and stimulating curriculum which responds to the needs of students and develops their knowledge of the world in which we live.
  • To encourage creativity and experimentation with mathematical language and confidence in communication of ideas.
  • To develop a culture whereby students are able and willing to tackle mathematical problems in unfamiliar contexts

About the Academy

We are proud that Outwood Academy Portland is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. We are an 11-18 academy based in the large friendly town of Worksop, near Sheffield and Nottingham.

Since joining the Outwood Family in 2012, our students have achieved impressive exam result success.

We have created an educational environment where staff and students constantly strive to improve; where teachers sharpen their skills and expand their repertoires to deliver an outstanding learning experience; and where teachers, classroom assistants, mentors, tutors, inclusion support assistants and students operate as a seamless team. This enables everybody, staff and students, to not only see but also help fulfil the potential in each other. Following its latest visit, Ofsted noted that our ‘teachers and support staff comment positively about the opportunities they have for regular training to develop their skills.’

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.
