Wokingham

Job type:

Job overview

Our non-executive Trust Board establishes policies and objectives, monitors performance, and holds the Chief Executive and wider executive leadership to account for achieving educational and operational goals. Trustees also ensure compliance with legal and financial requirements, as well as upholding high standards of governance.

We are open to sector backgrounds, provided you can demonstrate a good understanding of strategic development. However, following a review of Trust Board skills and knowledge, we are particularly interested to hear from those with skills and experience in:

  • Education Leadership
  • SEND
  • Organisational Development
  • Charity Law and Governance
  • People and Employee Relations
  • Media and Marketing

First time Trustees are welcome to apply provided they understand the governance role and how it differs from executive leadership. We are particularly interested in individuals who may be open to taking on a board leadership role at either the Trust Board or committee level.

By sharing your skills, expertise, and passion for education, you can play a crucial role in promoting educational excellence, fostering collaboration among our schools and driving positive change within our organisation.

Time Commitment

There are six formal Trust Board meetings each academic year which take place in person in the early evenings. As a Trustee, you are also expected to join a Trust Committee, which meets online once a term, and attend three governance training and networking sessions which are a mix of in person and online. There is also the opportunity to take part in panels across the Trust. Trustees will probably need to contribute around 3 to 5 hours a month. This allows for an average of 1 meeting a month with time for reading and preparation. The hours may not be balanced across the months, with some months having two meetings and others none. We very much encourage our Trustees to visit our schools and they are invited to participate in key events such as recruitment days, prospective student events and awards evenings. All reasonable expenses for travel can be claimed back.

The criteria which will be used when considering your application to become a Trustee is as follows:

  • Commitment to supporting MET’s vision and raising standards of achievement
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a team in the best interest of the Trust
  • Willingness to fulfil the role of Trustee with energy and enthusiasm and commitment to preparing for and attending meetings on a regular basis
  • Meeting the relevant statutory eligibility requirements for trustees as set out in the relevant regulations and undergoing all necessary background checks (for example, an Enhanced DBS check)
  • Willingness to attend further training, as required

Closing date: Midnight, 31 August 2024

Applicants are advised to apply as early as possible as the Trust reserves the right to interview and appoint before the closing date.

We are an equal opportunities employer and are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

Maiden Erlegh Trust was established in October 2014, when we received approval to open a new free school to serve the needs of students in East Reading. Maiden Erlegh School in Reading opened its doors to students in September 2015.

Since then, we have welcomed Great Hollands Primary School (Bracknell), Maiden Erlegh Chiltern Edge (Sonning Common), Hamilton School (Reading), Cranbury College (Reading) and River Academy (Reading) into the Trust. We are a growing family of schools and are poised for a most exciting future.
