Job overview

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on children’s mental health and on pupil absenteeism as a result. A key focus here at Cardinal Langley moving forwards is to look at ways of improving pupil attendance and punctuality and raising achievement through the implementation of targeted strategies and by building close, positive relationships with families where there are barriers to learning.

Governors have therefore created this new post of Pastoral Officer (Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4).

The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of pastoral and administrative duties linked to attendance which will include ensuring the accuracy of registers, monitoring pupil attendance and lateness and following up on this through communication home (including Truancy Call), ensuring all unexplained absences are accounted for.

You will also be responsible for other pastoral and administrative tasks linked to the role. Please refer to the job description and person specification for more details.

This is a permanent, term time only, full time position (37 hours per week).

Working hours are anticipated to be 8:00am until 4:00pm, although there is some flexibility which can be discussed at interview, and will incorporate a 36-minute daily, unpaid break.

To apply, please complete the CES application form for support staff and email it to recruitment@clrchs.co.uk quoting the job reference PASTORAL/241006 on the application form.

You must show in your application how you meet the essential criteria of the person specification.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 11:59pm on Sunday 6th October 2024.

We anticipate that interviews will take place on Wednesday 16th October 2024.

Your first referee should be your current employer, or most recent employer if you are not currently in work. In a school or college, your referee will be the Headteacher/Principal. If you have ever worked with children (paid or unpaid) please include this as one of your references. We will contact your referees by email if your application is shortlisted, so please provide an email address for them on the application form and contact them in advance to give them your consent to provide the reference. If you have worked outside of the UK, you will be asked to provide references to cover this period, if appointed, along with any DBS equivalent issued by the relevant authority. Cardinal Langley Roman Catholic High School is a mixed, voluntary-aided, Roman Catholic, comprehensive secondary school, situated in Middleton, North Manchester.

There are 1200 students on roll, including 140 in the Sixth Form.

Founded in 1959, the school is named after Thomas Langley, Bishop of Durham, and later Cardinal. Trusteeship of the school is held by the Diocese.

Our school is highly respected in the local community and continues to expand due to its popularity, with a £14 million recent investment in facilities through the Building Schools for the Future Programme, whilst September 2016 marked the opening of our De La Salle Centre, providing new classrooms and a designated facility for our Year 7 students, including dining room, gardens and recreation area.

Our curriculum is designed to stretch and challenge students of all abilities and potential. There are numerous curricular and extra-curricular, clubs, trips and activities on offer to help children develop their interests and grow socially as well as academically.

There is a very strong spiritual culture and ethos here in school and children are encouraged to help those less fortunate than themselves and get involved with the various social projects and fundraising activities for the charities that the school supports. The teachings of the Roman-Catholic Church are at the heart of our school and influence every aspect of the curriculum. We are proud of our Catholic character but also of our diversity and everyone is most welcome within our school community, regardless of faith.

A willingness of staff to contribute to the extra-curricular life and the Catholic ethos of our school is essential.

Staff welfare and development are also key aspects of our school community. We have an excellent support programme for NQTs and ongoing professional development opportunities for all staff. There is a great deal of respect and support amongst staff, and as a new colleague you will find that you are quickly welcomed into the Cardinal Langley family.

We are immensely proud of all of our students, whatever their talents, abilities and achievements. We have a fantastic Additional Needs department supporting our SEND children and a strong pastoral team working to ensure that our more vulnerable students get the care and encouragement they need to fulfil their potential.

We are located in Middleton, North Manchester, and have excellent transport links via the M62 and M60. Situated centrally in the UK and only 7 miles from the centre of Manchester, our location provides easy access to a range of superb leisure and shopping facilities but is also close to the natural beauty of the Pennines. We are within easy reach of Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Cheshire and Merseyside, with excellent road and rail links, and several international airports close by for those well-earned holiday getaways.

Ofsted

“ The headteacher’s leadership is strong and effective.  He has developed a strong team of leaders, which has enhanced the school.  Teaching overall is good.  Pupils achieve well in most subjects across the curriculum and pupils are safe and happy in school.  Pupils’ behaviour is good and the great majority have positive attitudes to learning.  They work hard and take pride in their work.  The school is a harmonious community where pupils show good respect for one another and for staff.”
