The British School Jakarta (BSJ) is a British International School with a distinctive British heritage, providing outstanding education for 1,400 students aged 2-18. One of the leading international schools in South East Asia, BSJ is a vibrant global community, welcoming students and families from over 50 different nationalities. BSJ takes huge pride in the fact that it is a non-profit, non-franchise educational establishment enabling it to carve a clear path in learning and teaching.
Founded in 1973 with support from the British Embassy, British School Jakarta has a rich history of growth and transformation. From its origins as 'The British School' to becoming 'The British International School' (BIS) and a Foundation (Yayasan) in 1976, BSJ has continuously evolved. In 1990, the school relocated to its 44-acre Bintaro campus, officially opened by Prince Edward in 1994. In 2014, BSJ adopted its current name to comply with Indonesian regulations on the use of 'international' in school names, while maintaining its commitment to providing a globally recognised education.
In the rapidly changing world of international education, BSJ aspires to be a pioneering school setting new standards and recognised as a sector leader. The strategic aim is to be a school for ‘today and tomorrow’ and a series of unique partnerships, including Manchester City Football School and the Center for Systems Awareness are expanding BSJ’s sphere of influence, and in turn enriching the educational experience and choice for its students.
Wellbeing is integral to life at BSJ . In January 2024, we appointed Andrea Downie, a world-renowned wellbeing expert, as our inaugural Head of Wellbeing on the Board of Executives to lead this important area school-wide. In the last three years we have held two outstanding Wellbeing Symposiums featuring some world leading authorities on Wellbeing, Positive Psychology and systems science, including Dr Peter Senge, Robert Biswas-Deiner and Professor Lindsay Oades.
“Structure shapes behaviour” is a mantra at BSJ and in both Primary and Secondary schools; there is a 30 minute session for Wellbeing on a daily basis. Our bespoke Wellbeing Framework is constructed to support the needs of the whole BSJ community and permeates our approach along with agentic and inquiry based learning across the school. It is very much an innovative approach to such an important area of school life and future-proofing the school.
Now, in the 2024-2025 academic year, BSJ embarks on an exciting new chapter. The school will proudly unveil its new undercover stadium—one of the largest in Indonesia—and will introduce a dedicated Middle School, bridging Year 6 and Year 7, to enhance the holistic academic journey. These developments reflect our ongoing dedication to creating world-class learning environments, building on the momentum of our 50th anniversary.
Mission, Vision & Values
Our mission is to Inspire Excellence in Education and Life. This coupled with the vision that supports our commitment to Learning, Teaching and Wellbeing at the school enables BSJ to have a very ‘active’ approach to school life.
BSJ is a member of several International and British educational bodies, including The Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) of which the school is a Founding Member, The Council of British International Schools (COBIS), The Council of International Schools (CIS), The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and The International Baccalaureate (IB). BSJ joined the Heads Conference (HMC) and the Educational Collaborative for International Education (ECIS) in 2018.
In May 2023, the school successfully navigated the CIS | WASC | IB synchronised accreditation visit and gained many commendations for Wellbeing and our learning and teaching across the school.
It is also important to recognise BSJ’s commitment to educational bodies in Indonesia and we are members of the Association of National Private Schools (ANPS) and Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama (Private Schools in Indonesia) and we regularly host conventions and conferences for both organisations at the school.
BSJ Profile
Located in one of the most dynamic and fastest growing cities in the world, BSJ provides an exceptional educational experience, nurturing, challenging and supporting students to become active and capable citizens of tomorrow. In the last year, the school has hosted Alumni events in London, Singapore, Jakarta, Boston and New York.
Our students are drawn from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds with over 50 nationalities represented in the student body. Coupled with this, there are 160 members of teaching staff and in total there are 420 staff on campus everyday supporting the core business of learning and teaching.
Our youngest Primary children begin with us in our Kindergarten where they broadly follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. When they transition into Year 1, our curriculum blends core elements of the English National Curriculum with an inquiry-based, skills-focused approach, sparking curiosity, creativity, and confidence from the earliest years. This emphasis on wellbeing is woven into daily routines from Kukangs (ages 2–3) right through to Year 13, ensuring our students develop self and meta awareness, adaptability, compassion, and an intrinsic understanding of social responsibility.
On opening, our Middle School (Year 6 & 7) will bridge Primary and Secondary, creating a seamless transition. Here, we foster independence and deepen critical thinking, laying a solid foundation for the rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes in Secondary. With our accreditation across the Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP), and Career-related Programme (CP), BSJ provides a robust and comprehensive secondary education that prepares students for success beyond school. BSJ is proud to send students to some of the world’s top universities, as well as institutions that align with each student's unique aspirations and career pathways.
If you’re looking to join a school that values growth, wellbeing, and a forward-thinking approach, BSJ could be the place for you.
