Job overview

Birkenhead High School Academy (BHSA) is a highly successful all through (3-19) academy on the Wirral. With a truly comprehensive intake, it is one of two state-funded, non-selective academies sponsored by the Girls Day School Trust (GDST). BHSA focuses on providing the highest quality education and being a beacon of excellence in girls' education. We are very much part of the GDST family and share the same aims as pioneers and shapers of girls’ education, whilst contributing to and benefiting from the GDST’s extensive network.

With students, BHSA’s focus is on giving girls every opportunity to develop into fearless, confident and responsible young women. Girls are encouraged to be challenged, take risks and to develop a life-long love of learning. They have access to outstanding levels of support both academic and pastoral care, coupled with plenty of stretch and challenge. The results show this - our Progress 8 figures are some of the best in the area. A high aspirations culture and ethos permeates both in and outside of the classroom. Students are encouraged to take advantage of our extensive enrichment programme and the plethora of GDST activities throughout their time at the school.

We are looking for an exceptional Principal to lead the Academy forward on the next chapter of its development and build on the success of Mrs Rebecca Mahony. Whilst very proud of our achievements, we are not complacent. There is much to achieve in an ever-changing education landscape. You will not be alone. You will have the support of a high quality and committed leadership team, staff group and Trust.

The successful candidate will be a strong collaborative leader, communicator and educationalist with a track record of leading high quality education provision. With a passion and commitment to girls’ education and achievement, you will share the ethos and values of the GDST and the Academy. You may be an exceptional Deputy Headteacher/Head of School ready for the next step, or an experienced Headteacher looking for a new challenge. Either way, your emotional intelligence and ability to work with and through others will set you apart.

Further information about this exciting opportunity can be found at www.pentir.com/roles/bhsa.

For a confidential discussion please call our advising consultants Maureen Nicholas (07540 - 222519) or Mike Phillips (07830 313 915) at Pentir.

Closing date: Monday 13th January 2025.

Birkenhead High School Academy and the GDST are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Vision statement

Birkenhead High School Academy is unique on Wirral as a 3-19 girls state academy. We are a thriving, all through learning community, embracing core traditional values with a firm eye on the ever changing future. Our overall school direction can be encapsulated in three words: challenge, opportunity and partnership. Girls are encouraged to be challenged, take risks and to develop a life-long love of learning. They are given every opportunity to develop in to fearless, confident and responsible young women. We foster a family community within the school and also we are very much part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) wider family, sharing their aims as pioneers and shapers of girls’ education. BHSA students are strong members of this movement, with our girls benefitting from and contributing to the GDST’s extensive network.

We firmly promote the all through approach to education, with the Junior School’s “Grow, Flourish, Think” model seamlessly blending in with the Sixth Form “Aspirational, Inspired, Independent” message.

We have the highest standards in achievement, attendance, appearance and conduct. Our girls have access to outstanding levels of support both on the academic and pastoral front, coupled with plenty of stretch and challenge. Our high aspirations culture and ethos permeates both in and outside of the classroom and girls are encouraged to take advantage of our extensive enrichment programme and the plethora of GDST activities throughout their time at the school.
