Job overview

Term time only

Wycombe Abbey is an exceptional place for our pupils to learn and our staff to work. Working here you will be part of a world class school and community of 420 staff and 650 pupils. We are committed to encouraging curiosity, bold ideas, innovation, leadership and delight in learning – not just in the pupils, but in our staff body too, both teaching and support staff. We are looking for people who can bring new ideas, a passion for their area of expertise, skills and enthusiasm that will enrich our community as well as encourage our pupils to do their best.

Life at Wycombe Abbey goes beyond the job title. We encourage staff to be fully involved in School life and offer a rewarding working environment, generous employee benefits package, continuous professional development and an emphasis on staff wellbeing throughout your time with us. Whether you are a member of the teaching staff, House staff or support staff, you will be part of the whole team at Wycombe Abbey. Everyone at School plays their part in inspiring our pupils to strive for ambitious goals and to recognise that they can make a positive difference in the world, now and in the future.

We are seeking a diligent and enthusiastic individual to provide support across a boarding house as Resident Matron of Cloister House. This is an incredibly important role providing pastoral care to the girls, under the leadership of the Cloister Housemistress and the Deputy Housemistress to create a relaxed, happy and caring environment for our girls.

Cloister House has around 50 pupils from ages 12 to 17, situated at Daws Hill at the top of the Wycombe Abbey site. Daws Hill was originally an 18th century hunting lodge home to the Carrington family when they sold the main Abbey building to the School. Within the collection of buildings making up Daws Hill, there are music practise rooms, a large dining room, kitchen areas and communal living rooms. The core values in Cloister are family, acceptance and happiness, and the running of the House is based on these values.

The successful candidate must have previous experience working with young people, a strong commitment to the boarding ethos, warmth, enthusiasm and excellent communication and organisational skills.

This is a residential role and the post-holder is therefore required to be a resident within the boarding House during Term time as well as before and after the beginning and end of terms in order to ensure the efficient preparation and running of the House.

Hours: The Resident Matron will be on duty in the House at all times during term-time (approx. 32 weeks), with the exception of a 36-hour rest period each week. There will also be time off during the course of the day/evening.

To apply: Further details can be found under ‘Current Vacancies’ on our website: Wycombe Abbey Recruitment Hub. Please see the job profile document for full information about this role. To apply, please complete an application form and submit this, together with a covering letter, to the Headmistress, Mrs J Duncan by selecting “Apply for this job”. Should you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact the HR Team on 01494 895575 or hr@wycombeabbey.com

Closing date for applications: 28 November 2024

Interview date: Week commencing 2 December 2024

We reserve the right to appoint to this position before the closing date, should we receive a high volume of suitable early applications.

Wycombe Abbey is committed to maintaining full boarding for the needs of modern families. Girls who enter the school at 11+ have their own Junior Boarding House. From the age of 11 to 18, pupils live in nine mixed-age Senior Houses, and in the Upper Sixth girls move into Clarence House, a purpose-built study-bedroom complex.

Many co-curricular and enrichment opportunities are on offer for girls across the age range. Our sports teams regularly reach national finals and the sports department offers more than 30 sports on a consistent basis. Our music department teaches more than 600 individual lessons a week and nearly every pupil plays an instrument if not two. The drama provision is equally impressive with numerous productions happening annually.

The School is ideally located to be able to enjoy a wide variety of activities with other independent schools including Eton, Harrow and Radley. The boys join the girls for dinners and dances. We also enjoy close relationships with the two boys’ grammar schools in High Wycombe, with our pupils and theirs co-operating in choirs, an annual Management Conference and other social and academic events.
