Job overview

Science Technician - Lincoln UTC

Salary range £24,500 - £27,081 FTE (pro rata, term time only)

Lincoln UTC is a specialist school for science, mathematics, and engineering. Our students, aged 14 – 19, enjoy a friendly, mature, and professional learning environment, which is underpinned by equality and supportive relationships, based on tolerance and mutual respect.

The Science Technician will work closely with the Head of Department for Science, as well as the other science teachers, to ensure the smooth running and resourcing of our very successful, bustling department. All students in key stage 4 study Physics, Chemistry and Biology as part of their ‘core’ curriculum.

We are a small school with 390 students on role presently, as such we have a relatively small staff team, 49 in total - 31 with teaching responsibility. With a team of this size, we will expect our new member of the science team to have a ‘can do’ attitude, where we help one another both in and out of our specialist areas of responsibility.

Main responsibilities:

  • Preparation and care of equipment and services to classroom activities - to include setting up and preparing for science based practical demonstrations
  • Keep abreast of current health and safety requirements - ensuring that safety standards are understood, met and maintained by those employees and pupils who are working with technical equipment
  • Support pupils and staff in the use of equipment and apparatus within the classroom
  • Organise, in collaboration with the Site Manager, to repair and service equipment as required
  • Oversee inventories of stock, breakages and disposal in line with best practice
  • Maintain and develop adequate booking system for use of equipment
  • Ensure asset inventory and departmental inventories are reflective of school property
  • Review policies within department and make recommendations which assist the efficient and effective use of resources within the school
  • Attend departmental and Health and Safety meetings as required
  • Maintain and clean equipment within the department ensuring that it is in working order and safe to use
  • Delivering, checking and returning stock from classroom back to storage
  • Record monitor and re-order stock as necessary, liaise with finance department and suppliers as required
  • Assist teachers and the Head of Department

Applicants must have a working knowledge of current relevant Health and Safety Legislation, for example COSHH, CLEAPSS, Manual Handling.

Other Duties - The duties and responsibilities in this job description are not exhaustive. The post holder may be required to undertake other duties that may be required from time to time within the general scope of the post. Any such duties should not substantially change the general function of the role. Duties and responsibilities outside of the general scope of this grade of post will be with the consent of the post holder.

The atmosphere at Lincoln UTC is both unique and special. We would welcome (indeed encourage) visits to the college so that you can see for yourself what we have to offer. Equally, we understand that this is not always possible and we will not view applications from candidates who have not visited less favourably. If you would like a phone call from the Principal who will be happy to discuss this unique role in more detail just let us know.

We are not selective, but we are not for everyone. Our challenging technical, practical  and academic curriculum is not an easy option. We have a very mature, calm and  purposeful learning environment, and require students to be fully committed to our  approach.

The UTC prepares students for a seamless transition into the workplace and for this  reason we operate a longer working day than most schools. Our hours begin at 8.45am  and finish at 4.15pm, with a 20 minute morning break and a 30 minute lunch. All  required work is completed within this time frame therefore we do not issue formal  homework.

We do not have a uniform but expect our students to dress accordingly in business  attire. We also do not operate a bell. Students are expected to effectively manage  themselves, as they would at university or in employment, and arrive at lessons on time  and ready to learn.

Our behaviour policy is consistent and has clear boundaries, therefore disruption is rare  and students treat our business environment with the respect it deserves.

We have fewer students and smaller class sizes than most ‘ordinary’ schools, and for  this reason lessons are less chaotic. Teachers have time to help everyone individually,  which leads to the development of positive and supportive relationships between the  students and the staff.

Attendance is in excess of 97% for all year groups, which is exceptionally strong.  Students are happy and proud to be part of our community. They enjoy coming to the  UTC and want to attend regularly.

Our vision is to ensure that every  student develops the skills required to  secure the next step of their chosen  career, either at university or in  employment. In order to achieve this, we place an  explicit focus on skill development  and the acquisition of the traits of the  ideal learner. It pervades all that we  do and the ways in which students  are encouraged to learn.
