Dulwich College is seeking strong language graduates, including those looking to change career and native speakers, to train as secondary school Spanish teachers.

Dulwich College is the lead school of the South London Hub of the National Modern Languages SCITT, a school centred, subject specialised teacher training programme designed to help address the acute shortage of Modern Language teachers.

The SCITT approach is different to traditional teacher training in the following ways:

·        Trainees on the programme are in school from day one and at the end of the year are awarded both qualified teacher status (QTS) and a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE).

·        Trainees gain hands-on experience in the classroom through two contrasting school placements in our partner schools.

·        The course is taught by MFL experts and involves training at university and at the SCITT’s Day School at Dulwich College

·        Successful applicants will receive a £26,000 tax free bursary (subject to eligibility) for the training year. There are also more generous scholarships of £28,000 available from Languages Teacher Training Scholarships, which can be applied for. Trainees can take out a Student Loan if required to cover the tuition fee of £9,250.

·        For trainees who left education some time ago, there are subject knowledge enhancement courses of various lengths available, for which trainees receive an additional bursary for completing.

We are looking for candidates who have the potential to be an outstanding teacher. You must be able to demonstrate extensive subject knowledge in your chosen language or be a native speaker. A good honours degree or a recognised equivalent qualification with a high level of fluency in at least one modern language is needed.

Information about taster days at Dulwich College (comprising lesson observations and an introduction to the course) and the application and selection process can be found on the website https://www.nationalmodernlanguages.com or by contacting Catherine Juyol on JuyolC@dulwich.org.uk.. The course start date is August 2025.

Applications can be submitted at https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-teacher-training.

Dulwich College is an academically selective independent boys’ school in south east London with a tradition of inspired teaching, genuine scholarship and co- curricular breadth. We are a school committed to providing a wealth of opportunities to pupils and colleagues within a nurturing, equitable and caring ethos.

There are approximately 1,630 boys on the school roll, of whom some 130 are boarders. There is a strong history of diversity at the College, reflecting that of south east London generally, but also that we are committed to an expanding programme of means-tested access. Currently about 30% of pupils have such an award but we hope to increase this to 50% in the coming years.

Situated in 70 acres, yet only 12 minutes by train from central London, the College enjoys outstanding academic, co-curricular and sporting facilities, including The Laboratory, a RIBA National Award-winning Science and Arts building. There has also been an extensive refurbishment of its iconic Grade II* listed Barry Buildings and surrounding landscaping.

Further information about the College can be found on our website www.dulwich.org.uk.
