Reports to: Secondary Learning Support Coordinator, collaboration with the Deputy Head Secondary, other members of the Student Support Services team, as well as teaching staff.
Responsibilities: The Learning Support Educational Assistant provides essential support to students with diverse learning, social, emotional, and academic needs. The role involves collaborating with teachers, the Student Support Services Team, and parents to create a nurturing learning environment. The Educational Assistant helps deliver social-emotional learning programs, academic support, and assist with the implementation of tailored learning activities to ensure students’ success.
The Student Support Services Department
The Student Support Services (SSS) team provides a multidisciplinary approach to supporting BST students. SSS aims to create a safe and stimulating environment that helps students enjoy learning and achieve their goals. The team brings expertise in Counseling, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Learning Support (LS), and medical and Healthcare. The role involves providing both preventative development work and responsive support to meet the individual and group needs of students, ensuring their academic, social, and emotional well-being.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Support for Teaching and Learning
- Individual and Small Group Support: Assist students in areas of need (e.g., English, Maths, Science) to ensure they are appropriately challenged and supported in their learning.
- Curriculum Planning: Collaborate with teachers to plan, evaluate, and modify lessons, using appropriate resources and strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
- Educational Program Delivery: Assist with the implementation of predetermined learning activities, including alternative programs such as ASDAN or Functional Skills to support students’ educational development.
- Assessment Assistance: Support in organizing, administering, and delivering standardized assessments to track student progress.
- Data Collection & Evaluation: Monitor and assess student progress through qualitative and quantitative methods, adjusting interventions as necessary. Write reports on student progress and standard scores.
Support for Social and Emotional Learning
- Social-Emotional Instruction: Teach and model social-emotional skills, emotion regulation strategies, and conflict resolution techniques to individual students and small groups.
- Wellbeing Support: Work closely with the Student Support Services Team to enhance students' social and emotional development, fostering resilience, self-esteem, and life skills.
- Collaboration: Work alongside teachers, the Student Support Services Team, and parents to deliver appropriate interventions and adapt learning activities based on student needs.
Support for the Curriculum
- Curriculum Assistance: Support the delivery of educational programs designed for students with additional learning needs, ensuring they are tailored to individual students’ goals and strengths.
- Specialised Support: Plan and deliver sessions that support students on the Register of Need, including those requiring alternative educational programs.
- Resource Preparation: Help prepare and organize learning materials and teaching aids, ensuring students have access to appropriate resources to succeed in their learning tasks.
Additional Responsibilities
- Teacher Support: Provide feedback to teachers on student progress, assist with record-keeping, and contribute to the development and sharing of Student Learner Profiles.
- School Support: Observe and report on students’ progress, assist in maintaining classroom equipment, and support with administrative tasks as directed by the Secondary Learning Support Coordinator or Head of Secondary.
- Wider Life: Actively participate in the wider life of the school, contributing to its inclusive ethos and supportive environment, e.g. the BST residential programme.
- Professional Development: Participate in team meetings and CPD sessions to stay informed on best practices and contribute to the ongoing development of the support team.
- Any other reasonable request: To complete any other reasonable administrative or student facing support as requested by the Learning Support Coordinator or other member of the leadership team.
Key Skills and Qualifications
- Be passionate about inclusive education.
- Be able to inspire, challenge and motivate all students regardless of ability.
- Have a university degree or equivalent.
- Experience working with students with diverse learning, social, and emotional needs in an educational setting.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage and support students in both individual and group settings.
- Understanding of educational programs for students with additional needs.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- A Certificate in Competence in Educational Testing (or be willing to undertake this qualification by the end of the first year in post).
- Be resilient and able to manage a busy workload with a positive approach.
- Be approachable, empathetic and compassionate - a good listener.
