Job overview

The Falkland College Teacher of English and English as a Second Language (ESOL) is an exciting opportunity to work with a small team delivering a range of lessons in a post 16 setting. The number of students varies each year and the demand is based on student needs as they re-sit their GCSE level English or study online/or in class A ‘Level courses or if appropriate offer Functional Skills level 1 & 2 classes. The role will also require the delivery of adult ESOL, outside of normal Government working hours from beginners to Advanced. A typical working day may start at 10am to Noon with 1 ½ hours for lunch, then from 1:30 to 7pm, however, hours are flexible with an expectation to work 37.5 hours a week with 30 days annual leave, which can be taken around the teaching schedule.

The Role:

To offer appropriate level of English lessons to students, studying GCSE, A Level and Functional Skill (level 1- level2) either in a 1-1 setting or in small classes, usually 3-5 students. The role will also require the post holder to deliver ESOL lessons after working hours, from beginners to advanced and may be required to assist with ESOL delivery from KS1-KS4 as well as HM Prison Stanley. This will be an exciting opportunity for the post holder to develop a training package for the Falkland Islands, delivering lessons face to face or over the telephone or Teams, to people living in remote settings. It is a diverse role and requires an individual to be self-motivated, problem solving and prepared to work unsupervised as the sole expert in their field at the College. Teaching hours will be approximately 25/week with 12 1/2hr of planning and preparation time. 

Your main duties would include:

  • Develop the opportunity for post-16 English education across the Falkland Islands.
  • Prepare lessons and schemes of work to enable students to prepare for examinations in English.
  • Undertake delivery of lessons around a flexible timetable including evening class delivery of ESOL lessons.
  • Deliver Functional Skills, GCSE, A Level and Beginner to Advanced English lessons and English as a second Language.
  • The delivery of lessons may include duties from KS1 to KS4 in the Primary and Secondary school, as well as in a prison setting or using telephones or teams to deliver lessons to remote areas of the Islands.
  • Maintain records of students progress and provide feedback as required through marking working, mock examinations or reports.

The Person:

  • To be a graduate secondary teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (recognisable in UK) who has completed the statutory induction year as an NQT or Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training (DET) or equivalent with experience in delivery of English lessons.
  • Level 5 Diploma or above ESOL qualification
  • Evidence of attendance and capturing impact from recent & relevant CPD/INSET.
  • At least 3+ years’ recent secondary and or Tertiary teaching experience, within the UK or a British curriculum school/college with a breadth of curriculum experience.
  • To have proven ability of delivery of English lessons at GCSE and A Level as well as ESOL lessons.
  • To be resourceful and find solutions to problems.
  • To be able to work in a small team and to be confident to act as the sole subject specialist at Falkland College.
  • To be creative in developing an engaging and flexible English Programme for Falkland College.


The Package

  • Fixed Term Contract, up to 4 years
  • Starting Salary £42,141 – £48,590 (depending on qualifications and experience) rising to £52,055 for exceptional candidates
  • Eligibility for a 25% gratuity, paid upon successful completion of the contract
  • 30 days annual leave, plus government and public holidays (totalling 41 days leave)

About Falkland Islands Government

The Falkland Islands Community School is a fully inclusive comprehensive school which caters for boys and girls of all abilities between the ages of 11 and 16 as well as providing a resource for the community as a whole.  In addition to general classrooms there are two Science Laboratories, a Music Room with three practice rooms and specially designed and equipped rooms for Art, Information Communication Technology, Design Technology, Food Technology and Textiles.

The Community School incorporates the Community Library and exists alongside the Leisure Centre, which is managed separately. The Leisure Centre includes a 25 metre Swimming Pool, Sports Hall, a Squash court and a Cardio-Vascular suite as well as outdoor facilities for football and athletics.  The library is well stocked with books divided equally between fiction and non-fiction as well as a varied selection of videos and CD ROMs.

Years 7 to 9
Students transfer from IJS/Camp to the Community School at the start of the academic year in September. On entering the school, students are placed in two mixed ability groups.  Setting in English and Mathematics is organised at a later date. Group numbers are smaller than in the UK but currently the largest class size is 21.

The curriculum followed is broadly similar to the National Curriculum studied by pupils in England but the content of the Programmes of Study has been adapted, where appropriate, to take account of the unique opportunities presented by the history and environment of the Falkland Islands. Spanish is taken by all Key Stage 3 pupils.

Years 10 and 11
A full range of curriculum subjects is offered as GCSE examination choices for pupils in Key Stage 4. Core subjects are: English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, PE, PSHE and PDC (Personal Development Curriculum). The remaining subjects offered are preferences, but the curriculum has been broadened to include some vocation GCSEs such as Catering, Health and Social Care and PE Studies.


Candidates are entered for GCSE examinations set by the examination board deemed best suited by subject leaders: University of Cambridge International Examinations, EDEXCEL , AQA and OCR and WJEC.
