About The Axholme Academy
LOCATION
The school is situated in rural surroundings on the southern edge of the small town of Crowle. We are approximately 10 miles west of Scunthorpe, 17 miles east of Doncaster, 11 miles south of Goole and only 1.5 miles away from Junction 2 of the M180. The cities of Hull, Leeds, Sheffield, York and Lincoln are easily reached within one hour’s driving time.
The school’s catchment area covers the part of the Isle of Axholme north of the A18 and includes primary schools in Crowle and the villages of Keadby, Eastoft, Luddington and Garthorpe. The vast majority of children from these areas transfer to us. A number of students from East Yorkshire and Doncaster also opt to attend our school. Approximately two thirds of the students travel to school by bus.
BUILDING AND GROUNDS
The school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. It occupies a lovely site providing very good accommodation including a full-size sports hall and good specialist and general teaching areas.
Recent capital developments include:
- A major investment in new biomass boilers
- New roofs
- LED lighting
- The school has extensive and well-maintained playing fields set within pleasant grounds surrounded by open countryside. Additionally, the Axholme North Sports Centre is on the school site and includes a swimming pool, outdoor tennis and netball courts, gym, and 3G outdoor football pitch.
THE SCHOOL
The school roll currently stands at approximately 565 students.
In March 2023 Ofsted confirmed that The Axholme Academy continues to provide a good education for students.
They reported that leaders have high expectations of pupils’ conduct. Pupils are polite and respectful and in lessons, they focus on their education. Leaders are committed to providing pupils with a rich and diverse set of opportunities to develop their cultural capital.
They found that students feel safe and that our safeguarding is effective. They judged that governors ensure that there are high levels of accountability across the school and that they are proactive in finding out about how the school is working.
Our strong GCSE performance, including outstanding English and maths results, put us in a very strong position to continue our successful growth and development with the outstanding team at the academy.
TEACHING STAFF
There are presently 33 members of the teaching staff.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
We maintain a sharp focus on teaching and learning across the school. We provide a range of CPD opportunities for teaching and support staff with the intention of continually improving standards. Where development needs cannot be met in-house, staff are encouraged to access high quality external provision. We embrace, promote and share excellent teaching and learning approaches to ensure that each student receives a top class education.
CURRICULUM
All students on entry to Year 7 will study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, R.E., Technology, French, Art, Music, P.E. and Complementary Studies. This curriculum model is maintained in Years 8 and 9, with slight variations in
MFL, and for the Support Group.
EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS
All students work towards a range of external qualifications including GCSE and BTEC. Students are entered for examinations administered by various boards, but principally by AQA, OCR, Edexcel and WJEC.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
A wide range of academic, sporting and social extra curricular activities are available to students. These are mainly held during lunch time.
