Job overview
Job title: Teacher of Mathematics
Salary: MPS / UPS + London Fringe
Hours: Full-time/part-time
Responsible to: Head of Faculty for Mathematics and Computing
Contract: Permanent
Required for April or September 2025 (or 1st July for an Early Career Teacher) we are seeking to appoint a well-qualified Teacher of Mathematics to teach across the age and ability range including GCSE and A Level in a faculty which achieves excellent results and high standards. A recruitment and retention allowance may be payable to a suitably qualified candidate.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and imaginative individual to join a friendly and supportive Mathematics and Computing Faculty. Ideally, candidates will be able to offer teaching of up to A Level Mathematics/Further Mathematics/Core Mathematics, but this is not essential. Candidates with experience or expertise to teach outside Mathematics (in particular Computing or Science subjects) are welcome to apply and should indicate this in their letter of application. Exam results in Mathematics subjects at BHGS are consistently above national averages and Mathematics courses are very popular Post-16. The school places a high value on STEM subjects and enthusiastically participates in programmes working to break down gender stereotypes regarding STEM. ECTs and more experienced teachers are welcome to apply.
Our pupils regularly participate in Mathematics UKMT Maths Challenges (and progress to subsequent rounds), Maths Team Challenge competitions and Maths Week England activities. Pupils are invited to attend enrichment days at universities and AMSP activities. We run a number of enrichment clubs across the faculty including Maths Team Challenge, Origami club, Artful Maths, Minecraft, Lego Robotics and Tabletopia (board games). The faculty is well stocked with resources and subscriptions such as White Rose Maths, Mathspad, MyMaths and Mathswatch. We are always seeking opportunities to enhance our offer to the pupils and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to build on our firm foundations.
Visitors tell us that our school is a friendly, lively and stimulating community where we emphasise the importance of the individual’s contribution and take pleasure in sharing and celebrating achievement. They commend the good behaviour of the pupils and their thirst for knowledge. Bishop’s is a diverse community that offers mutual support and encouragement and expects everyone within it to respect others’ heritage, identity, religion and beliefs. We hope that the values, self-discipline and sense of personal worth that pupils gain here will be a support throughout their lives as British and Global Citizens. We welcome applications from all members of the community and always encourage interest from racially minoritised communities and from other groups that are underrepresented in the UK education system. We are a single sex school but we encourage any gender to apply for staff posts.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the school at a time of growth and development. The Mathematics Faculty makes a huge contribution to the life of the school and we are looking for a candidate who will help to extend this work.
Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School is heavily over-subscribed and has around 950 pupils on roll, including the Sixth Form. We are fully committed to our values of teamwork, respect, honesty, trust, kindness and ambition. The school successfully completed its most recent Ofsted inspection in December 2022 and was judged to continue to be ‘Outstanding’. However, we are not driven by Ofsted and place a strong emphasis on developing the whole person, through improving pupils’ knowledge, skills and character. The school benefited from a total rebuild completed in 2017 and enjoys excellent state of the art facilities. BHGS holds International School Status, holds the Music Mark accreditation and is a Fairtrade School. Hatfield is within easy reach of London and other areas and the London Fringe Allowance is payable.
The school's Admissions’ Code gives priority places to children of staff and we give high priority to staff development. Staff are able to apply for our Professional Development Award which provides bursary payments to help finance CPD that goes beyond the school’s usual training programme.
We take safeguarding of our students extremely seriously and an enhanced disclosure will be sought through the Disclosure and Barring Service as part of the school’s pre-employment checks.
