This is an extremely exciting time to join our Mathematics Department at Thorns Collegiate Academy. If appointed, you will benefit from working within an established team of Mathematicians whilst also contributing to the education of students at an exciting stage of the Mathematics Department. Our staff are trained in supporting students overcoming barriers as well as enthusing them in learning Mathematics. We run the second most popular club (after Football) at the academy, Chess/Darts/Snooker! We have a strong team of student ‘Maths Champions’ who champion our subject as well as conduct and feedback student voice termly. We now require Numeracy to be at the forefront of our agenda of building confident numerate adults. We strongly encourage meeting our team and embarking on a tour around the department.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience teaching across the key stages. Applications from newly qualified teachers are also welcome
  • Be a consistently good/outstanding teacher
  • Be an exceptional classroom practitioner with high expectations of both learning and behaviour
  • Able to inspire, motivate and enthuse pupils

Numeracy Coordinator Role

• Raise the profile of Mathematics with students, staff and parents

• Improve the standard of numeracy as a life-skill across all year groups

• Ensure every student, parent and staff member understands the role of numeracy in everyday life

• Enthuse all students with Mathematics by promoting numeracy across the curriculum

• Liaise with HOD to create a vision and long term action plan for the continued development of numeracy across the curriculum

• Weave numeracy into the Personal Development curriculum by working with Middle Leaders

• Support staff with promoting the links between lessons and the ‘bigger picture’ of numeracy and Mathematics

• Formalise and standardise the terminology used across and within departments when discussing, dealing with and marking aspects of numeracy

• Liaise with Inclusion to ensure that numeracy skills are being encouraged and developed across the whole curriculum

• Liaise with subject teachers to improve standards by modelling, coaching and observing the teaching of numeracy skills across the curriculum, including paired observations and feedback related to numeracy

• Monitor and evaluate the impact of the action plan at regular intervals by conducting learning walks, student interviews and a work scrutiny and as a result support improvement through training or other strategies

• Attend Middle Leaders and wider Senior Leadership Team meetings when requested and contribute to the whole-school development
