Job overview

Due to the existing post holders external promotion, a fantastic opportunity has arisen in our Science & PE departments to join a small, vibrant and successful school. Newly qualified teachers are welcome to apply. Mentoring, coaching, support & career development is a school priority to encourage and grow the successful applicant. We will give you the training and support to teach your second subject. In our latest Ofsted inspection (November 2023), The Swanage School was judged 'outstanding' for 'personal development. The school's excellence across the board was recognised with 'good' judgements for all other criteria, and with a 'good' grading for overall effectiveness. The Swanage School opened in September 2013 as a brand new 11-16 comprehensive school. We have 345 students on role across years 7 to 11. Whilst popular, we aim to stay small.

It is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to be involved in developing our school and students in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. The Swanage School has been created on ‘human scale’ principles, which means that strong and genuine relationships – within school, with the local community and with the wider world – are at its heart. We are not part of a big multi-academy trust; we are small, versatile and full of ambition for our students and staff. Our vision is to provide an innovative, supportive and future-facing education for young people and enable the highest levels of attainment and achievement on all levels. Staff enjoy working at The Swanage School because we believe in staff and students and will always go the extra mile to make opportunities happen for staff and students alike. The school is genuinely embedded in the community and has forged links with community groups, businesses and charities in the town and beyond. These links have broadened and strengthened the education and life experience of our students. We really are a school for the 21st Century. We make decisions firmly on the premise of what we think is best for our students, not what looks best on performance tables – although we do very well at those too. The successful candidate will be: • Highly ambitious for their students • An outstanding teacher – or the desire to become one because you love your subject • Able to build the aspirations and confidence of students • Committed to building an exceptional and caring learning community in school. We are offering the opportunity to: • Join a vibrant, motivated team who are value driven and share the same noble purpose – building character, confidence, skills and knowledge in the next generation • Be part of a school at the heart of its community • Make a real difference to the learning and achievement of young people • Benefit from a wonderful environment in which to express your passion and make your mark • Work with a committed team of teachers and leaders who are positive, optimistic and dedicated to becoming the best teachers they can be.

About The Swanage School

About The Swanage School

The Swanage School is a thriving single-school academy trust in a unique setting on the Jurassic Coast, England’s only natural World Heritage Site, and within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It opened in 2013 as an entirely new 11-16 secondary school founded by the community on behalf of local young people and resides in purpose-built accommodation at the gateway to the town of Swanage.

The School is proud to have quickly built a reputation for excellence in teaching and learning and as a school where every child is known as an individual, can benefit from exciting opportunities, and is nurtured to reach their fullest academic and personal potential.

The School is committed to remaining human-scale with current students on roll of 350 and a tight-knit teaching and support team who ensure that good relationships remain at the heart of everything the School does. The school is very much part of the community and links with community groups and local organisations are extensive.

The Academy Trust overseeing The Swanage School is Education Swanage Ltd, a community co-operative that anyone is welcome to join if they sign up to its ethos and values.

The school was born from a vision of a happy institution which students and staff alike are proud to be part of, that is engaged at all levels with its community and its beautiful surroundings, and where students take responsibility for their learning. Our distinctive approach is perhaps best summed up by our Swanage School 12-point charter:

  • Excellence is central to teaching and learning
  • It is a pleasure to teach and learn
  • Every student’s needs are understood and catered for
  • Young people are known and treated as individuals
  • Students are able to take responsibility
  • All aspects of development are encouraged: intellectual, physical, creative, moral, spiritual and emotional
  • All students engage in The Swanage School Challenge curriculum extension programme
  • Young peoples’ experiences of school extend into their adult lives
  • Behaviour is characterised by mutual respect for others and the environment
  • Staff are supported through continuing professional development
  • Parents and local residents are welcomed as partners in learning
  • Horizons and global awareness are broadened through national and international partnerships
