The Science Department at Salesian
The Science Department at Salesian has a track record of success at both GCSE and A-level. The department is enthusiastic and progressive, with Teaching and Learning at the heart of everything it does and a focus on teaching your science specialism at GCSE and A-level. We are exceptionally proud of our results. Last year 74% of students achieved a Combined Science GCSE between grades 9-5, with an overall subject progress score of +0.7. In addition, Triple Science students achieved outstanding results. 85% of students achieved a 7+ in Chemistry, 91% of students achieved a 7+ in Biology and 93% of students achieved a 7+ in Physics. Every triple science subject achieved a progress score of above +1.0. At Key Stage 5 we have a thriving Department and excellent results. In Biology 58% of grades were A*-B, in Physics 58% of grades were A*-B and in Chemistry 53% of grades were A*-B.
We are committed to constantly evaluating and improving our pedagogy and we are committed to delivering outstanding lessons that excite and enthuse students. The department currently consists of 15 specialist science teachers and 5 technicians, who all play an integral part in the development and improvement of the science experiences across the school. Relationships are important and we pride ourselves on supporting one another.
The science department is led by the Head of Science who oversees the heads of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and KS3/4 co-ordinators.
At Key Stage Three, students are taught in mixed ability. Key Stage 4 students are taught in ability sets but consistency in the level of outstanding teaching remains the same; we expect every child to aim for a grade 9 regardless of what class they are in.
At Key Stage Four, we currently teach both the GCSE Combined Science and the GCSE Separate Sciences, AQA. In years 10 and 11, each class has 3 teachers and each teacher teaches their specialism. At Key Stage Five Biology, Chemistry and Physics all have a very healthy uptake of students and the range of classes and topics available offers superb CPD opportunities for staff wishing to expand their teaching experience.
The science department is exceptionally well equipped. There are 7 labs and a brand new science lecture theatre. All labs are equipped with the latest equipment and SMART boards enabling teachers to bring learning to life and engage our learners. Additionally, the science department has its own class set of ipads which can be used to enhance teaching and learning in lessons. Lesson planning and delivery is done with ease as all lessons are collaboratively planned and fully prepared, and are made for delivering a science mastery curriculum.
As part of a Salesian School we are also committed to extra-curricular projects. We are proud to have an active KS3 Science Club. A variety of educational visits and trips have been used and are planned to enhance and enrich the curriculum with visits to the Science Museum, CERN, Marwell Zoo and Royal Holloway. A-level Biology students also undertake a field course to Juniper Hall to develop their practical fieldwork skills. Students are also entered for the Biology and Physics Olympiad competition to challenge and stretch the more able candidates.
We are committed to teacher training and often have SCITT and PGCE Trainees looking to take advantage of our exceptional training and support. We are also always keen to work with ECTs as we firmly believe that we benefit as much from their fresh ideas and creativity as they do our guidance and experience.
The successful applicant will have a genuine passion for the subject and for teaching children, the ability to inspire staff and students, and the desire to go the extra mile to help our students achieve their full potential. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work within a strong, successful department, with potential to across the ability and age range (including Sixth Form).
We are extremely proud of our department at Salesian and look forward to welcoming a colleague who is as passionate about teaching Science as we are.

About Salesian School
Salesian School is characterised by the philosophy of the Salesian founder St John Bosco (1815-1888). He stressed high educational standards and sound moral and religious education. He insisted too on a friendly atmosphere in his schools where the idea of community could be fostered. We strive to ensure that every student experiences personally, a happy atmosphere that will help them to leave the school with a high level of confidence in their own abilities as well as excellent examination results. These goals are delivered through a strong pastoral system, excellent learning and teaching and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, physical and social extra-curricular activities.
It is at the foundation of our values to:
- Develop the whole person - mind, body and spirit
- Ensure relationships are key
- Ensure that all decisions are made in the best interests of the children
- Ensure that everything we do is based on Gospel values
We promise parents and students that we will:
- Ensure that students get the best results they are capable of achieving
- Develop the skills and attributes that students will need to be successful in the world of the future
- Develop the morals and values of our students to help them lead decent Christian lives and go on to promote these values throughout the world
We who work in Salesian Schools state our belief in our young people. We recognise that they come from differing backgrounds but that they are of equal value to God and to us. In the spirit of St John Bosco, we turn our efforts to those who stand in special need because of lack of material or emotional security.
We set out to create in our schools a joyful atmosphere in which the dignity and worth of each pupil and member of staff is recognised, developed and safeguarded. Our schools are noted for an atmosphere of welcome where all feel at home and a sense of safety and security. Staff are willing to be present with the pupils in friendship and to go that one step further, where this is necessary, to meet the needs of young people.
We strive to affirm, develop and challenge the abilities of each. We are concerned with the way in which each person matures within the context of the community. While recognising that national standards have a part to play, in seeking to achieve these, we emphasise the unique path each person will take. Our main criterion is personal worth. We prepare young people to be a positive influence in the places where they live and work with others.
Within our Salesian Schools we foster the spiritual, moral and religious development of our pupils and a lively celebration of prayer. In this, we respect where each one stands and his or her basic freedom to choose. However, we strive to present these important features of school life in a way that speaks to the needs and concerns of our young people.
We recognise that in our present age there are many social and educational tensions that stretch our staff, at times, to breaking point. In our schools, therefore, we undertake to affirm our commitment to and support for each other.
We also recognise that we are part of a network of schools within the Diocese and Local Area. We appreciate and respect the work of colleagues in these schools.
