A lesson on Greed in the novella designed for mixed ability y11 classes with differentiated tasks throughout. Tasks include: entry work on using quotes to identify the theme of greed; challenge objective with key definition. Starter is an interleaving task (mild, medium, hot questions on comparing Mr Birling and Scrooge). Development is a choose you own (gimme five) context task with choice for more and less able students. The mini-plenary is random questions using the pose, pause, pounce, bounce method. For the main task, students must read an extract from the text and exam-style question then write one analytical paragraph about the effects of greed. Sentence stems are included. The plenary is a self-assessment checklist to use on the paragraph they’ve written.

Starter on symbols followed by a reading of the key scene (A3 S4) with key questions about what the banquet and Banquo’s ghost might symbolise for students to discuss. Notes follow which address these points. For the main activity students must explode a quote (model explosion provided) and write a paragraph about the theme (model provided) with mild, medium and hot challenges to differentiate for mixed ability groups. The plenary is guided self-assessment (with the statements that students must use). The lesson was devised with mixed ability year 10 groups in mind but would definitely suit year 11 and possibly year 9 sets also.
