Michael Morpurgo Running Wild Differentiated Reading Comprehension Question Booklet

A set of reading comprehension questions for Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild. There are 3-4 questions per level per chapter, with the three levels labelled as “Try It”, “Challenge” and “Master.” “Try It” questions are mostly literal while “Master” questions are a range of literal, inferential and evaluative and require a detailed written response.

I have used these questions in two different ways:

Print as a booklet and share one between two.

Print from page 2 onwards, chop each page and give pupils a set of questions each to be stuck in jotters.

Generally, I allow pupils to choose which level of question they feel is most appropriate for them (of course some need a bit of support with this) then ask them to label or highlight to show which questions they answered. Allowing them to choose encourages pupils to reflect on their own learning.

Running Wild works really well as a whole class novel, particularly when teaching a rainforest themed topics. The noel deals with issues including death of a parent, natural disasters, deforestation and poaching, and pupils have always become very engaged with the story - even some of my most reluctant readers! Running Wild has been recorded as an audiobook and is available on Audible. My Learning Resource Services also had a copy on disc.
