I have regularly used this puzzle-solving activity as an ice-breaker at the beginning of the academic year and it works particularly well with 11th graders. It can also be used if you are studying the USA.

Students have to solve riddles to discover American states and cities while drawing their itinerary on a map. The activity also enables them to clarify some common confusions (for example, distinction between New York State and NYC).

Usually, it takes most students about 50mins to cover the whole activity.

The answer key is provided.
