This math resource could also be called finding the area and perimeter of irregular shapes, polygons or compound rectangles. All the figures are composed of 2 or 3 non-overlapping rectangles. This is a natural follow on from the worksheets of Area and Perimeter of Rectangles

In each shape there will be one or more side that is unknown and students will have to find its value, either by counting in the case where the figures are on a grid, or calculating where lengths are given, in order to complete the area or perimeter calculation.

To find the area, students must first break down the shape into rectangles, and by either counting squares, using the formula for area or perimeter of a rectangle, get to the final answer.

There are 6 Sets of Differentiated Worksheets

Sets 1 to 4 are made up of 2 non-overlapping rectangles

Set 1: Introduction - Find the total area of the shapes shown on a grid, each shape divided into 2 rectangles.

Set 2: Find the area and perimeter of the shapes shown on a grid. Students must now divide the shape into 2 rectangles and add them to find the area.

Set 3: Find the area of rectangles with a rectangular space inside shown on a grid - subtract one from the other to find the shaded area. These are not overlapping rectangles but show a situation where instead of adding , areas must now be subtracted.

Set 4: Find the area and perimeter. No grid. Measurements are given with one or two of them missing.

Sets 5 & 6 are made up of 3 non-overlapping rectangles

Set 5: Find the area and perimeter of the shapes shown on a grid. Students must now divide the shape into 3 rectangles and add them to find the total area.
