GCSE AQA Chemistry C1.4 Complex Distillation
A complete lesson including exam questions, explanation of distillation, animation, independent task, peer assessment.

Students to write a paragraph to explain how distillation works using the independent task sheet for assistance. This can then be peer assessed.

Success Criteria:
Label a diagram of the apparatus used for Distillation.
Describe what is separated in Distillation.
Explain the process of Distillation.

Do Now: Exam style question. (Link to previous lesson)

Main:

  1. Introduce students to the idea of complex distillation and the key word Miscible liquids.

  2. Have a demo of the Distillation equipment with condensing tube set up to show students the different stages of distillation. Demo the distillation of alcohol to remove ethanol. Ethanol can be used as a biofuel. An animation can be used alongside this demo.

  3. Students independent task. Students to use the task sheet to label, describe and explain Distillation. (Extended writing.)

Plenary:
Peer assessment: Extended writing to be peer assessed for content and literacy.

Demo: Distillation of ink water
Risk assessment needed.
