De Stijl / The Style was the name of a Dutch modern art movement, initiated by the two artists Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, c. 1914. He was a Dutch contemporary of De Stijl artist-group and felt himself strongly connected with the ‘De Stijl’, but he was also critical on Mondrian!

De Stijl group demanded of her artists ultimately the use of only primary colors, painted in flat surfaces, more or less geometrically. Founding artists were Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg.
