An idea from an ex-colleague to help students struggling to draw the electron configurations of atoms. Students use the first side of the sheet to shade in the boxes showing where the electrons would go, filling up the first column, then the second and so on. Once they have got their head around the idea of filling up spaces in order, they can apply this to the diagrams of atoms on the second side of the sheet.
