English Diagnostic Test - Reading, Writing, Language - KS2 - Back to School, Start of Year

Are you looking for a way to easily assess the English levels of your new students at the start of the year? This diagnostic test will help you out A WHOLE LOT!

Suitable for 10-11 year olds, this test contains the following sections and question types. Please note, the volume of this test is large and is better completed over about 2-3 lessons (perhaps a section per lesson!)

Section 1: Reading Comprehension.

• 1 x Non-fiction text: “Our Warming Planet”
• 1 x Fiction text: “The Mysterious Attic”
• 10 x Questions for EACH text covering: literal comprehension, inference, vocabulary, summarising and text features

Section 2: Writing

• Spelling: both identifying incorrect words and spelling correctly (16 questions)
• Punctuation: completing end marks of sentences and identifying incorrect punctuation (7 questions)
• Parts of Speech Grammar: highlighting nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and articles in context (14 questions)
• Free writing with prompt

Section 3: Language

• Synonyms and antonyms: identifying
• Prefixes and suffixes: identifying and using
• Figurative language: identifying
